I purchased my 92 240SX earlier this week and I am in the process of getting it back running again. Back story: The seller said that she had taken it to a mechanic and he told her that it had a blown head gasket. After which she parked the car and it sat for at least a year. I have not verified that it needs a head gasket. I put a new battery in the car and it will turn over but will just not crank. Give me some pointers as to what to do next. I cleaned the plugs (they were nasty) and still nothing (I haven't had the chance to buy new ones). Also, what regular maintenence items do I need to do (besides plugs, oil, all fluid changes, belts)? Thanks for the help in advance.

Before you even try starting this car and causing further damage why dont you do a leak down test on the engine to confirm the H.G. is blown. If you dont have the equipment to do this then the vehicle NEEDS to be at a shop where some one with the proper training can diagnose the issues.

well its not very hard to do a leak down test... you can rent the equipment from autopart stores such as autozone

so do not i see the dire NEED of this to be in a shop

I have a friend that has all the equipment and he is coming over Monday to do a leak down test as well as a compression test. Then we are going to go from there on the head gasket issue.

Yea, check compression and cooling system first. If they pass then I would.

-Clean battery cables and engine ground. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Replace PCV valve, clean IAC and throttle body, check and replace lines and hoses as needed, flush cooling system and replace T-Stat and rad cap, change oil and filter, Fuel filter and a fresh tank, check for spark, then get it running and bleed the coolant, time the motor.

- I'd also search timing chain guide and remove that

After you get the H.G. issue straightened out, check out the alternator for it not cranking. Place like Pep Boys and Autozone will test it for free.

also if the car has been sitting for a year the gas may not be all that good anymore, you may want to either siphon it out or add some high test depending on how much is in the tank.

Yeah, there was only 1/4 tank so I am going to add some 93 Octane and some gas additive to help restore the gas.
