I know this has been a post topic before but I'd like to revisit. I've been getting this code for the last 1 1/2 years intermittently. The code comes up, I reset it, and don't see it for 3 or 4 months maybe BUT it does come back. I've got 83,500 on my 06' M35X. Use nothing but tier 1 93 octane. The car runs so smooth you could put a dime upright on the hood. It runs great and is as quick as it was 50,000 miles ago. I've read the 2014 posts on this subject and its clear the majority of the posts say its a cat issue. Not sure this code is true. And if it is a cat issue and I don't address it, is there a negative outcome. I could see if the M was not performing correctly, but that's not the case. The car run with outstanding performance. Appreciate the forums comments.

I hate this code and it's brother, P0420. Two of the cars in my family have been suffering from the 420 code and we cant' fix it.

I would think there really is an issue, either with the CAT itself or the sensor after it. Sensors go bad with age, and if you're interested in some troubleshooting instead of just buying parts, I would swap the sensor 2 between the passenger & driver sides.
If you start getting P0420 instead, then your sensor is suspect. You might end up clearing it just by unplugging and reseating the plugs for a better connection.
If the same code comes, then the catalyst efficiency might be truly compromised and it's time to go back through the troubleshooting steps in the FSM.

*Personally, I don't clear codes unless I am making a change to track with it. In fact, for daily drivers and cars I drive often, I just make the change and leave the code to reset itself or change to whatever new code is.

No it's not. My dad's Subaru has been on and off...as soon as he goes off he runs and gets inspected lol. My father-in-laws Hyundai has it and no matter what it comes back on and he just doesn't want to spend the money cause the car is old.

I agree with this. Start with the basics first; the sensor(s).
