Well I recently had an electrical problem causing my stereo to never turn on. After living with it for over a month, I got tired of it. So, I stripped the interior. At first it was just the dash so that I could get to the harness. Well, While I had that out, I figured I might as well do some other stuff I have been wanting to do right? So I pull the carpet out and paint/dye it black, and also fill the dead spaces up with Great Stuff. I'm not taking credit for this. There is a build on zilvia and that guy did it, which made me want to do it. He used 12 cans. I used 10. I filled the a,b, and some of c pillars, the rail that the front seats bilt into, and the big open tunnel(i guess thats what you could call it) that goes under the door sill. Let me go ahead and warn you, this is VERY messy. Take out every bit of interior panels, the seat belts, dash, etc. Don't keep anything in the car. You can pick up Great Stuff at Lowes, and maybe home depot, I didn't check. I paid about 3.48 a can and total about 30 dollars with military discount(you have to ask about it at lowes). The can looks like this with a yellow lid:
This stuff expands but I still filled each hole up, as you can see here: The guy from zilvia said this is basically like the heat activated sound deadening foam that ford used in their f-150s when they claimed to have the quietest interiors. When I first did mine my car was in the shade. after putting my seat back in to drive it to school a few days later, I came out and realized it expanded more in the heat, so be aware of that. One more warning, if you have a sunroof make sure it doesn't mess up the drainage tubes. When mine expanded it pull the drivers side front tube about an inch away from where it connected with the sun roof assembly.
Now for the review: I just got my car completely back together today and took it out for a drive. There is a major difference. of course your going to have road noise, but it is much less, and also the car sounds more secure I guess you could say when on bumpy roads whereas before it had a ton of vibration. It isn't too expensive and if you have your car stripped then I recommend this. Now enough reading, enjoy a few pics.
While I was working on the car I scored this headunit brand new for $100before: after:
also, as I mentioned I painted my carpet black. came out pretty nice before: after:
And just becasue, here's a pick of my old car. Never let me down, even though I drove the hell outta it. In all of its 205k mile auto transmission stock goodness, here's my first car and my first s14.I sure do miss her
