When I put the car from DRIVE to REVERSE, I hear this unbearably loud rubbing/grinding noise from the rear wheels as I back up...I'm pretty sure it's not the brakes, could it be the axles or something to do with the transmission and differential....UGH, I need help! :help

Hmmm.. Shift from drive to neutral, guessing auto. Mine does this on occasion but its a 5spd.. Same thing? When I heard it first thing that came to mind was the rear brakes rubbing the rotors but they seem to be ok and nothing else is visually rubbing.

Here's a way to test wether it's the brakes or not. I have this same type of sound coming from my car. When you're in reverse and it starts to make the groaning sound, very lightly tap the brakes just enough for the pads to sqeeze a little without the car slowing down. If the sound stops as you tap the brakes then that's probably the problem.
