I'm not terribly familiar with the setup on the manual, but the concept is similar.
The reverse light runs off of the gear position sensor. Think of the sensor as a momentary, normally open switch. By default, the circuit is open, retarding power.
When the car is in reverse, the switch is actuated, closing the circuit. The switch is stuck in the closed position...completing the circuit and causing the reverse lights to go on.
This is being said just from an electrical standpoint. I don't know the specific setup of the 5-speed, but the concept is like i said above.
You have to find out why the circuit is closed.
