I've switched out the bulbs, and I've checked the main fuse by the kickpanel driver side. Fuse seems to be connected fine and in working order. Is there anything else that could cause my reverse lights to not be functioning correctly?

This is a 1993 hatchback by the way. Thanks everyone.

forward most plug on the transmission, most likely one of the wires broke off. this is the switch on transmission that tells the lights to come on in reverse.

the wiring diagram shows the wire colours to be green-white and green-blue. you can bypass this switch to test it but make sure you know what you are doing.

I quickly ran through the FSM to find out what the hell you're talking about. And I found the sensors - I see what you're saying, the FSM directs me to use a multi-meter to test for current.

If of course the sensor is malfunctioning, is the replacement job difficult?

---

And while I have a transmission thread up - I was wondering about leaking transmission fluid. I'm aware that smoke is coming from the shift boot is usually caused by the leaking of T/M fluid on the exhaust pipe. I'm wondering if the replacement necessary is the rear seal? How many places could the fluid really leak from?

I've never ever really worked much under my car and would still refer to myself as a novice, are all my problems best left to a transmission shop?

The factory service manual does a good job of describing the test. It's not a sensor; it is only a mechanical switch. It is either connected or disconnected. If it is connected(continuous), it powers the reverse lights. The test is an ohms test=resistance test= continuity test(continuous test). You need to DISCONNECT POWER TO CIRCUIT when you do an ohms test! You turn your multimeter to ohms and place probes on either side of switch. It should read very low ohms when in reverse. test a piece of wire to see what a continuous reading looks like. if the switch is open, the meter will read "1" meaning infinite ohms. check for broken wires also. another way to test the switch is to jumper the switch with a piece of wire. if the lights come on with a jumper, you know it is the switch.

Can't answer your other questions.
