I dont know exactly what it is called but i have the part and i was told it goes in the transmission so when you put it in Reverse it engages this sensor and turns on the reverse light.

With that said, I took apart the shifter from inside the car and i couldn't figure out how it went it. Do i have to drop the transmission to install this?

hahahahaha. You just made it a lot harder than it needs to be. The reverse sensor goes on the side of the transmission towards the rear of the bellhousing. It doesn't literally go "in" the transmission. If you jack up the car, there will be a hole that it goes into on the side of it. The sensor will also have 2 wires that should connect up to a plug on your lower harness.
