:wtf2:  :bs:

5th gear went out just before this had happened

The shifter is free to go in all gears with the clutch pedal in. When I release the pedal gears 1-4 grind and the car goes nowhere, while neutral and 5th go in reverse

For what it's worth the clutch has been going out lately, but I doubt that has anything to do with it considering the car still moves

I'm sure I need a rebuild. Any tips or ideas before I submit to a mechanic? :gotme

Does the shifter travel seem normal, or does it feel like its restricted? Its definitely worth popping out the shifter cover and boot to take a look at the turret to make sure nothing is stuck in there or something.

Yikes, if travel feels fine and all, it may be internal to the trans. There's forks and stuff that engage the different gears/shafts. If one of those forks/engagers popped off, you'll lose gears :(
