The problem lies in the sensor on the transmission, so changing the ECU does nothing. Basically when you're in 5th gear, the sensor sends a signal to the ECU, which in turn makes the ECU limit the rpms at 5000. That's the way the governor works.... it cuts the fuel when you hit 118 mph (5000 rpm in 5th gear) and for some reason yours thinks it's in 5th gear in any gear, hence the 5000 rpm (or lower) cutout.
This is only one possibility... rpm limiting can also be due to a faulty maf or even a clogged cat or exhaust restriction. But I think that it would limit the rpms in neutral as well with these problems.
Anybody else have anything to add to this?
