!!!REV LIMITER PROBLEM!!!

Helo i own a sohc 1990 240sx, and the rev limiter is at 5 when in any gear and revs up to like 6800 when in netural, what does this mean? Im Hardcore

Sounds to me like your 5th-gear sensor in the transmission is malfunctioning.

Why would it be limited to the 5th gear sensor? I to have the same exsact problem, Through every gear my engine cuts out at 5000 RPM. But in neutral it is around 6500 to 6800 rpm. I havent figured it out. I have Changed my ECU and when my car is cold it will allow the rpms to hit around 6000 in firsty gear but only the first time, then I will try again and it will cut out again at 5000. in fourth or fifth gear it will hit 3500 and cut out. I would really like to fix this. If anyone has had this problem please reply, as this really sux not being able to pull the entire amount of power out of my engine.

Sounds to me like your 5th-gear sensor in the transmission is malfunctioning.

The problem lies in the sensor on the transmission, so changing the ECU does nothing. Basically when you're in 5th gear, the sensor sends a signal to the ECU, which in turn makes the ECU limit the rpms at 5000. That's the way the governor works.... it cuts the fuel when you hit 118 mph (5000 rpm in 5th gear) and for some reason yours thinks it's in 5th gear in any gear, hence the 5000 rpm (or lower) cutout.

This is only one possibility... rpm limiting can also be due to a faulty maf or even a clogged cat or exhaust restriction. But I think that it would limit the rpms in neutral as well with these problems.

Anybody else have anything to add to this?

ya i got the sammme problem sucks i just got the car and i put cold air intake in it and it sucks cause it redlines at 6 or 6 1/2 and it just drives me carzy but i have no idea how to fix it but as soon as i know ill post it
