Rev Limiter...is fuel actually "cut"?

"The most antiquated and still very effective way of limiting engine speed is stopping Ignition spark to the cylinders immediately which in turn halts the engine acceleration, it feels like fuel is being taken from the engine so hotrodders coined the phrase "Fuel Cut"."

"Our cars have a "Soft" limiter which first retards timing a little, then more then cuts the ignition power (within a few milliseconds) this causes more of a surging feeling rather than a series of whiplash inducing jolts."

"Still another method used is the Throttle control method. Cars with Electronic throttles (in some cases) use the computer to close the throttle when it reaches its Rev Limit and this in turn creates another type of soft revlimiter."

Why do I post this?I have a 2006 5AT Sedan and never experienced the "pegging" phenomenon.Note, I've kept it at the rev limiter for about 3-4 seconds at 6800 RPM.

Someone on the forums originally stated that:"These are drive by wire cars, when limiter is hit, it simply shuts down the throttle. i.e. no different than you taking your foot off the gas."

Has Infiniti done some changes?

Most revlimitiers kick in a little after redline. Not sure where the actual cutoff is on a G35(never watched the tach as I hit it). What happens if you try to continue to accelerate from 6800 RPM? Mine was a 04 6MT and it was pretty harsh. Either a very quick throttle close or a fuel cut.

Well, ideally the rev limiter is set at 6700.It appears as if it kicks in at 6800-6900 but that's because the tach. is off by 100-200 RPM (if not a little more). With my 06, the car just hovers at redline with a significant drop in power. It doesn't peg the tach. like the older models.I just wanted to see if anyone knows the tech. behind the "pegging" and "hovering" phenomenon.-George

The electronic throttle seems to be a soundest way of implementing a soft rev-limiter. Cars with mechanical throttles don't have very many ways to implement a limiter without cutting fuel or spark. A Supra TT had a second throttle that was used for traction control that could be used for this (don't know if i was). Fuel cuts need to be harsh. Running lean could cause detonation so it would need to be a 100% cut. Spark cuts tend to be just as harsh but are not as eco friendly as unburned HC's go right out the tailpipes. Spark retards would increase heat but could be used as a soft limiter. I'd hope Nissan would use a electronic throttle control though as it's available and effective. But I'm not sure if it does.
