This is a noobish question sorry i tried to search on and off the site but no dice.

Has anyone ever tried to MIG weld (with gas) the return bung into the oil pan?

Yeah that's the most common way of doing it.

Ballers tap the bottom of the block near the oil pan. And OEM's do it that way too.

Tapping the block is a good idea if you have the motor out and can clean the shavings.

I know a few people who tapped the front timing cover. Seems to work good if you have A/C or PS out of the way.
