I'm looking into getting a set of new tires but the cost, of course, is sort of a turn off.

A buddy over on the Pathfinder/QX4 Forum introduced me to "Retread Tires" seen here:

https://www.treadwright.com/

Anyone ever heard of them/used them/know anyone with experiences?

Just for comparison, the A/T terrain offered is about $100 per tire as opposed to say a new BFG A/T at about $180

As a long time tire guy, I do not recommend them, I know they are not "cold capped" tires like the ones you see flying off of semis, but they still have problems. I would be leery of them due to the increased chance that you can have separation issues. They are cheap, but if you have to replace them sooner because the tread separated, you aren't saving any money. I wouldn't say they are dangerous, but if you ignore a separated tire it can become dangerous.

Whatever you do, stay away from cold-capped retreads, the tread is held on using only glue, there is no heat or re-vulcanization done. I don't think they even sell them for passenger vehicles, if they do, steer clear.

Good luck, and if you buy the retreads, you should let everyone know how they performed, more information would be great for everyone looking to save some money.

Retreads should never, ever, ever, ever be put on a sports car, ever.

Toyo Open Country A/T.
Fantastic truck tire, won't cost much more than the retread quote you posted. Certainly nowhere near $180 apiece for stock Pathy sizes.

I've heard good things about Toyos; definately not as aggressive of a tread pattern as the BFGs though; but that's no issue. I'm actually moving up to a 33in. tire. Toyos are about $30 less than BFG for a 33in. tire. Stock pathy is about 28/29.

I've got experience with recaps, but on semi trailers, not cars. Despite the attractive price, very Bad idea to use them on cars, especially on the steering tires.

I don't like them. I know someone who had a bad experience with them too. There used to be a lot of companies doing them but don't anymore. There was one who did it exclusively for high performance tires but the difference in price compared to new was not enough.
