My car failed to pass smog the first time I took it in. I replaced filters and the 02 sensor and I am going to get it smogged again in about a week. Anyway, I was thinking that if the timing was retarded, less of the mixture would be burned and therefore less exhaust would be produced. Anyone know anything about this/tried it before? Also, any tips on passing smog would be helpful. Thanks travis

less of the mixtue would be burned and your HC reading will go up and you may fail.

what part of the test did you fail? what octane gas are you running? changed your oil lately?

I know I failed the hydrocarbons (HC=hydrocarbon?) portion last time so this probably wouldn't be a good idea. gas is 91 octane and oil was changed 2500 w/ synthetic. Any other ideas?
