1989 SOHCMy water pump went out. This was a good time to installed and deinstalled a few things while the car was down.

New electric fan and controller...Removal of all EGR, charcoal canister and AIV....OBX header 4-2-1

The header is very loud (running N1 Ebay copy exhaust) and actually feels like power was decreased in the low end. Very shaky and bouncy when taking off on first gear. I noticed my cat (OEM) running hot after installation, actually smoking, maybe due to hotter gases after EGR removal ??

Should I run the silencer or different cat for improvement ??Maybe an exhaust leak?? I inspected the whole system and couldn't find anything...

man I just tossed a busted one th eother day, well hollow not busted... I have one from a jimmy.... 2.5 gutted but a test pipe MAKES more power. and is louder too. I put a 3" test pipe on just before my turbo install and was like ZOMG wtf way faster but IMO too loud, thats with a custom exhaust without resonators. 2.5"

now I'm just like zomg pppphhhssssssst whistle

so is the power loss across the board or just on low end? are your scv's still in? thats 6 right there, free.

SCV are still in, I left them "vacumless" for now. They should stay open. Just low end power....very sluggish.

Just unbotl the cat and see hwo she runs.. If it's fast then the cat is the problem. Either gut it,test piep, or new high-flo from me or Greg Azhitman

You said that the car was running very sluggish on take off? And you said that you left the SCV "vacuumless"? I hope you at least plugged up those vacuum lines. If not then this all makes sense. . . . With such a big vacuum leak the fuel press. reg. is allowing too much fuel pressure in the rail. This will cause the engine to run too rich and misfire at low RPM. This misfiring in enough doses will feed raw fuel into your cat which will cause it to run extremely hot and smoke.

FIXED!! It was a dead cylinder. The header gave the visual signal by changing colors during the initial burn-in. All tubes change color but cylinder 2, right there I knew that I was running on 3 cylinders. The injector had a bad connection. Now my problem is the electric fans....I started a new thread in order to try to find a solution to this.

atleast u had a new header on to figure out which cylinder wasn't firing!

fuel injector connections can be a mofo, my brother had that problem on his LT1, he almost spent hundreds on all new tune up stuff, when in reality just wiggling some of the connectors fixed it for free.....

keep me posted how the car feels, I'm going through some similar upgrades on my SOHC, cept it will be a couple months before I can get a header... my lower radiator support is pushed in on the bottom, the car is at the body shop now getting squared away....... it made my radiator bend, and it hence cracked, so I put a new one on it, then rigged up my new E-fan(dunno what car it came off of.. as it was on the ground at the junkyard hehe... I'm lazy) and since the radiator is pushed back towards the engine the intake tube wouldn't fit against the new fan....... Im also in the process of gutting the vacuum lines and everything else associated, as I hear all u need with vacuum is the FPR and brake booster, so everything else is getting sh1tcanned

hopefully I can get it all fixed and put my new halo lights on..... then I can try out the new suspension! i haven't driven my car in 2 weeks, i'm getting way too ancy, supposedly it will be done tomorrow!

Well, I also took the vacuum lines and EGR out. I think the injector plug got screwy while taking the metal vacuums lines that run down the intake. Let me tell you, it feels like a complete different car. A lot more power on low and top end. Acceleration is quicker and snappier. Go with the OBX header if you can find one. The SOHC model is not easy to find. It fits and sounds great. But now I need a new e fan, will see what happens....If you take the EGR out, you are also going to need the plugs to close the additional connections in the header.

the plugs - which are rarely included in ebay headers that i've seen - can be sourced through napa. they're magnetic oil drain plugs. it's the only thing i could find that would fit. i don't know if i have the part number still. it's an M24x1.25. the ones from napa have a 12mm hex drive. i used a short bolt with a 12mm head, ran a nut behind it and used that to tighten the "plugs". they are working just fine and i'm approaching 2000 miles on them.

Are you sure they're not M24 x 1.50? NAPA only has magnetic drain plugs in this pitch, not 1.25. I ordered 2 to try them and I'll let you know. That's the only M24 they had at all, the others were either M22 or M25
