Resonated exhaust tip

I had a magnaflow exhaust put in a few months ago with 2.5 piping. A few days ago I put on a resonated exhaust tip. I cut about 6-7 inches off the piping and bolted the tip on flush with the bumper. It sounds great now but it is a bit louder than it used to. I thought that the resonated tip would make it more quiet. I have yet to drive it on the highway... but city driving is definitely louder. Should I have left my piping uncut and slipped the tip on or did I do it correctly?
