Hey all,

I have a strong feeling that my timing is the cause of my bogging/hesitation issue. I have pretty much tried EVERY THING that I could.

I have tried looking for vacuum leaks (found one...fixed it, still have the bogging issue), changed spark plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, O2 sensor, oil, EGR valve, BPT valve, AIC (the part that connects to the air intake box), new gas, air intake cleaner, MAF connections, etc

I took the valve cover off today and noticed that the timing chain guide is completely gone. I have a feeling it broke off. I wonder if this caused my timing belt to jump a tooth or two. Anyway, how hard of a process would it be to get my timing (if it is off) back to where it should be without messing with the timing belt, it is possible at all.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it the way described in this link under the, "Timing Change" link?? http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html

I just want to get my 89 240SX running. :(

Thanks

Andy

EDIT: I meant to say timing chain. I am just used to saying timing belt. ;)

if your guide's broken, it's time to do a timing chain job. If you're going to do a timing chain job, you don't really need to worry too much about trying to reset the position, you'll do that when you install the new chain.

do you mean the top guide on the de motor? the top guide is useless. we remove them to quiet the motor all the time. if its a side guide, well you need a chain job.

I am talking about the top timing chain guide.

Man, this looks like it is going to cost me a lot to get this car running as it should. Maybe I should just let it sit until I can afford to get the SR20DET swap.:(

the very top guide is held on by two bolts. it is not important. dont worry about that one.

Cool, thanks for all your help. I just wonder where that piece went. lol

Do you know how much I should expect to pay to have the car timed properly??

just buy a timing light. Timing a car is ridiculously easy. If the timing chain is messed up, though, be prepared to do some serious work, and pay about $60 for parts, or just buy a new engine, because it'd cost more than a new engine to get a shop to change the chains. It seriously takes that long.

oops just realized you have an 89. you have no top guide. any guide that you are missin is bad(i was thinking of the dohc motors). also your timing wont be affected by the t-chain like most engines, your dist is driven by the oil pump shaft which is geared to the crankshaft(like old school pushrod v8 motors).

Oh, ok. I thought the 89 240 had a top mounted timing chain guide. I pulled the head off and didn't see it. That's why I thought it broke off.

Then what was the recall they had for the 89 240SX regarding the timing chain guide??

I am going to take my car to the shop to have the MAF cleaned and have the timing checked/set.

Thanks for all of your help. :)

I think it was a service bulletin. My sohc had paperwork saying "recall" but I don't think there was a recall. Also they replaced the guides withplastic junk. The revised version of the sohc timing chain kit is much better. Everything has metal backing and the plastic sections that the chain rubs up against is much thicker.
