do i really have to do all of these steps to reset the ecu? I tried the disconecting of neg. terminal but no luck, will a scaner reset without these steps? TIA

1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.
If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.

Yes, you must follow all of those steps. Which is cheap & easy or you could pay someone with a scanner to do it. Why do you need to reset your ecu?

wife came home from work yesterday saying the cel was on, i went out and turned it on everthing was smooth (nothing obvious) but i did notice when i turned the car on while it cranked to start the oil light flashed a few times. I checked the oil and it was low not dangeroud low but i did need to add some. I added oil and it didnt do it anymore, but still didnt drive it cause i was going to change the oil the next morning. Changed the oil new filter aswell and disconected the neg for about 10 mins, but nothing and it stayed on it didnt go away for a few seconds then re appear if you know what i mean.

You may have an issue though its coming back on.

First check would be the gas cap make sure its secure.

But then, yes reset the ECU with the pedal, its not too bad. If it comes back on after that its a problem.

Next time, you can reset the ECU with the battery method. You just need to pump the brake pedal a few times while the battery is disconnected. This drains the ECU and forces a true "reset".

If the CEL returns, have a dealer or a place with a scanner look at it. With an 03, it could be a component failing.

I use a video on my phone as a stop watch.
Wait til 3 sec then I pump the gas pedal down firmly 5 times quickly. Wait til exactly 15 sec then depress and hold gas pedal down til light starts blinking. Count to 13 (just in case) then off for 10 sec, then hold down for 10 more. Done.
