They took a dead rat's heart, washed out all of the dead cells, and were left with only the structure of the heart. They injected stem cells and created a new heart on the old heart's frame. And then it started beating! Ta-da!

Are you talking about embryonic stem cells? If so, then I agree with how it is right now, and that's not coming from a 'bible thumper.' I'm pretty much against harvesting my own kind.RobPaulson wrote:vague jab at bush,marlin29311 wrote:What??

Well, technically speaking, they never did. By the time it's gone to "fetus," it's no longer an "embryonic stem cell," and has developed into an "adult stem cell." This is probably a distinction that you were aware of or otherwise didn't matter to your point, but I feel it's important to keep in mind. "Embryonic stem cells" come from fertilized eggs that come from in vitro fertilization. They get stored, and if, in time, they aren't needed they get flushed down the toilet. Some of them never will go into a womb for an entirely different reason: they've got detectible genetic defects, and so aren't suitable for the pruposes of the in vitro fertilization industry.Encryptshun wrote:Stem cells do not have to come from an aborted fetus anymore. So, no ethical issue.
Did you even read the article before posting up your bigotry??? FAIL. God still loves you, thoughRobPaulson wrote:its about damn time

Another FAIL. Bush was a major supporter of stem cell research! Go back to your Obama blow up doll.RobPaulson wrote:vague jab at bush,

THIS is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. I can't even count how many times I've made fun of good ol' Robby Paulson for being far too conservative. I nearly peed I laughed so hard.wingFeather wrote:Another FAIL. Bush was a major supporter of stem cell research! Go back to your Obama blow up doll.RobPaulson wrote:vague jab at bush,

Think of that the next time you're tempted to post. You act like you know everything, but just like me you make mistakes. Hopefully you will be less of a keyboard commando in the futureRobPaulson wrote:

This article proves that there is no need to kill babies for research. As for killing babies in general, that is wrong on so many levels but you DO have free will thanks to God - so go on a killing spree if that is what you wantAppleBonker wrote:What about those of us who are for harvesting dead babies for research? it was a joke, and this isnt a political discussion, go sit on a priests lap you mindless sheep.
So, let's not make this a political issue, because it's not. The scientists have spoken. The religious right needs to STFU because no one's gonna be harvesting fetii. The "babies in a blender" lefties need to STFU because no one's preventing scientific advances.AZhitman wrote:Embryonic stem cell research has been LIMITED to the warehouse-load of existing cell material... The problem is, and I've cited it before, is despite 20+ years of research, scientists are NOT making much headway with embryonic cells. They can do just as much with adult or cord-blood stem cells.
The problem is, the Left screams and screams about this without looking at hard data. No one is missing out on "a cure", research hasn't slowed, and medical technologies continue to advance.
This argument puts the Left in a precarious position, because the only thing that hasn't been allowed is creating new embryos for some med student to experiment with...
And, as we've already covered, it's not "religion" - It's scientists TELLING us, there's no need. We have all the cells we need, and we're not getting anywhere.
Greg, thank you.AZhitman wrote:Methinks someone needs to do some more reading on the status of the stem cell debate in the scientific community.

To the OP: Interesting stuff. The whole "scaffolding" thing is incredibly interesting... did you see the articles about growing prosthetic ears and noses (for burn victims) on a rat's back? Creepy but awesome.
