Any suggestions?
I figured here that at least I can get some exposure to my question.

It's ball bearing. The only way to rebuild a bb turbo is to get a new center cartridge, which is about a whole new turbo. Typical garrett bb cartridges are around 800 to replace. You're better off getting another turbo.

Thanks! Yes, I know it is a ball-bearing cartridge.

I spent around $2k for the turbine new in Japan a few years ago. The new GT-RS kit is $2,460 in USA from HKS, so $800 isn't bad for the cartridge. You didn't mention the average jobber rate a rebuild shop would tack on, so I figure that's another $500 (just a guess). I've thought about just getting a new one (if parts/labor approach the MSRP new), and keeping the current one as a back up. Right now, I'm doing my homework and getting things lined up for next year.

Again, thanks!

http://www.majesticturbo.com/ That's their site, but they'll tell you the same thing, that you're going to need a new center section. You cannot take apart the center section due to something about the bearings being pressed in instead of being dropped in. Garrett does not directly sell replacement centers, but I do believe some distributors will, since you can upgrade t3/t4's to ball bearing center sections. As far as HKS goes, their turbo's are not straight Garrett's rebadged by HKS. I believe the housings are modified as well as possibly the blades and something else. You will need to contact HKS directly to see how to deal with that.

I know that on a complete rebuild, the center section would ave to be replaced. The impeller- if it's not knicked up and is still balanced, it can still be used. I suppose if the impeller is conditionable, I could get it lightened on the trailing ends and balanced for a faster spool up (the whole lag vs response thing).

In summary, I think I'll just go ahead and get a new turbine and keep the one I have now as a back up or sell it. It's in excellent condition. My mindset is that if I am going to go through the hassle of a complete rebuild/reform of my car in every area and not touch the turbine, it's like getting a new outfit and forgetting about shoes.

Again, thanks!
