Recently while driving my S14 97 I have a squeak noise hitting between 4000 rpm and above. Though it's spontaneous it has been occuring a little more frequent ..from once a week to maybe 3 times a week. Though the minute I switch gears and it goes below 4000 rpm it stops this high pitch squeak. Until I get to 5th gear and then it doesn't occur at all. From 1st gear to 4th though I will occur that squeak. Any ideas on what the problem may be and is it costly? Thanks for help in advance.

P.S I posted this earlier but didn't get a response. I don't mean to be pushy but I'm not sure what the problem can be other than the "transmission" and if so..which part is causing this?!

if it's a moderate to high pitch noise comming from the engine compartment, it's most likely the belts. Test to see if any are tight and if they are, spray some belt treatment or if none is available at the time, spray some WD40 or something of that nature onto the belts. Restart and test drive. If it still makes that noise, check power steering fluid level. If noise still persists... good luck.

I am not a mechanic, just a shade tree wannabe but what possitive result can you get by spraying your belts with WD-40? This is penatrating oil. If the belts are slipping, wont it cause them to slip more? I would like to hear back on this. If it does help, can anyone enlighten me as to why?

As for your problem, does it squeak at idle? Check your waterpump. They also squeak when they start to die.

if they are squeaky, why not just tighten them up, its faster than trying to find belt dressing or WD-40 (ive actually heard not to use WD-40, which makes sense because its an oil). they most likely squeak at that rpm because thats when your making the most power and the belts dont have enough friction with the pulleys to keep up with them, therefore you have to tighten them up a little bit. good luck

Where are the belts located and are they easy enough to adjust and tighten?

they are located at the front of the motor, just open your hood and look at them, and yeah, they are pretty easy to tighten. all you have to do is first, loosen the pivot bolt or whatever its called (this is the bolt on the alternator that connectes it to the block for the alternator belt, or the bolt that connects the power steering pump to the block for the power steering pump/water pump belt), then tighten up the tension adjuster bolt. it should be pretty much the only other bolt connected to the system.
