Hey, so I was replacing my valve seals today at work and we ran into some problems...

We were able to get everything apart and replace the valve seals themselves, but now I'm having TONS of trouble trying to get the valve springs re-installed... I can't keep the keepers on the retainers  and the odd thing is neither can any of the mechanics at work:eek: the damn thing is so deep in the head once its compressed we can't stick our fingers down in there to align the keepers, so the retainers keep popping off the spring.

I'm pretty damn frustrated now, but the good thing is, before we started re-installing the valve seals, I took the head and soaked it in our carb-cleaner vat, and the thing shines like a brand new head! its hot :pface

I don't know if any of you guys have done this or not (maybe Dee or Aaron or TMS)? If I can't get it here soon I'll just have the machine shop finish it when I bring the block to them this weekend:(

Suggestions?

Sean

Vaseline, it's not just for rotaries. Smear vaseline on the valve stems to keep the keepers in place until you can get the retainers seated.

Use any heavy grease to keep stick the keepers on. I usually use a long, bent pair of bird-beak pliers. Or you can use a long pair of tweezers. What are you using to compress the springs?

this odd looking compressor that bolts on to either side of the head with a bar going accross... and a sort of lever that pushes down on the retainer. Do you have a more suitable tool Inshan? I would be more than happy to bring it to you this weekend:pface

I had to build my own press machine and it worked, but I have another idea for you man, get the valves out and rub the ends where the retainers go on a magnet such as a speaker magnet, they will get magnetized and this way when you put the retainer and they will stay one.

Try putting on the keepers while your brother pushes down on the spring with pliers and you have to put the clips in with another pair of pliers

we'll see. When I was putting the rear 5 lugs on I messed up the threads on the driversside half shaft. Now I have to track down another one.
