Is it necessary to replace the cooling component of the radiator when changing a factory faulty 1990 Q-45 transmission??

Yes and no.Its good practice because an overheat due to clogged lines or weak rdaiator, are the most likely cause the transmission failed in teh first place.

But, instead you can bypass the factory heat exchanger stetup and install a aftermarket transmission cooler, not much labor at all and teh parts are real cheap ($60) ttoo. And it will be better for the transmission, than a new radiator.

PS: I have a low mile excellent maintained 91 transmission (infinit remanufactured) for sale, which will fit your car real well.

FredThanks for the tip on the radiator. I am told the 90 Q brain is absolutely not compatible with any other year transmission?? Where are you located? The car is in Fullerton California. Any suggestions?R. J.

The transmission's are identical except for very minor reliability improvements thru the years (91 clutch matrial was softer)Ther were some minor adjustments in the ECU's thru the years but very minor things addressing drivability mostly. The 93 TCU is the most different with first gear start and works fine with otehr year transmission's, with some minor driveability issues when used with other year ECU's ( otehr year transmission's no problem)In this clubs experience those trannies are interchangebale with the factory reman trannies out of Tennesse closely resembling those for 93 and fitting all years.

I am almost certain the incompatibilty info you received is wrong, but I will wait until Dennis aka Q45tech clears this up.But I think I know what he will say.

Orginally the factory required dealers to change the radiator and tcu when replacing the transmission [under warranty] then for 4-5 years the same proceedure applied in Customer pay. Currenty they just change the transmission and do a flush on the cooler lines and in radiator heat exchanger......since they only cover the reman for 12 months/12k this cheapened proceedure was deemed sufficiant.

There is a special ecu [equal to 93 TCU -75 model upgrade] that is recommended for the 90-93 reman but never purchased because of cost [$700].

I have a nice used transmission [from my Q] which has been flushed/cleaned to extremes and seen nothing but Mobil 1 ATF and a cooler/1st gear start [all its life]. This is available installed in Atlanta for $1,100 plus cooler and new Mobil 1 [say $100] ~~~$1200 total.......won't ship it since I want to see where/how it is installed. But you must have your own 1st gear start TCU to go with it.

I'll take you up on the offer IF the need arises!! (fine so far, just added half a bottle of Lubeguard black and it seems to help a little with the shuddering... '92 Q, appx 184K.)

Dust if off now and then!

Q45tech----What mileage on your trans? I might be interested. Will you only do install if I have 1st gear start ecu? I have stock 91 ecu.Pat

Mileage is relative vs pristine mainteanance......172,000 miles might scare you but it shifted as well as the brand new reman I acquired from a wreck. Had to pull it to replace the rear shaft seal so why not since the other one was just lying there. It is just my spare since the reman is out of 12k warranty now.

Junk yard replacements [7 day swap warranty] cost US $500 and oem rebuilds $1750.

The ideal is to find a reman that was just wrecked [kind of hard to do].

All one can do is hope on any used transmission.

I attribute part of the life extension to 1st gear start so not a good idea to change the way that transmission was used to operating...........

Members who don't change to 1st gear start EARLY are just asking for transmission failures even with remans!

What do you mean by 1st gear start? And how does starting in 1st gear improve transmission life?

Thank you-Jesda

90-92 Qs started in second gear for more smoothness. First gear starts give more leverage, hence less slippage, for improved transmission life. Of course we all like it for the increased performance and the reliability improvement is a bonus. You can do it manually with the shifter, get a 1993 trans computer or a Jim Wolf Tech TCU to get those perky first gear starts.

It can be self installed unless one is totally ignorant of elctronics and the effects of static charge. Do searches on ECU and TCU.
