Does anyone have a step by step guide on how to do this?

I posted a write-up from when I changed the belt on my car; here's the link to it: quick-how-to-drive-belt-change-on-l32-a ... 79969.html. There was also a thread recently on the same topic for the V6; v6-serpentine-belt-r-r-t580225.html.

wow - that is an incredible writeup! Thanks!!

I inspected my fan belt and it seems to be fine (black and no cracks) - what exactly does a cracked or fan belt that needs to be changed look like?

Thanks for the threads, Music!

As for cracked belts, they're a little tough to see sometimes and aren't always visible under the shade of the hood, but look for evidence like this:

What he said. ^

Grab a bright flashlight and poke around to find one of the pulleys where you can see the ribs (water pump); that will give you the best look at the belt. Some cracking and glazing on the ribs is normal - it isn't a cause for alarm, just keep an eye on it and replace it soon. If you see parts of the ribs missing, separating from the belt, or the edges of the belt fraying, then replace it ASAP.
