Sorry forthe stupid question-- but my speakers are blown and I wanted to replace them. My question is -- how are the speaker wires connected to the speaker itself? Are they just sodered on - or is there something else I need to know?

thanks for your help.

if you are gonna hook it up to the factory connectors, it's got a active speaker system which will be switched on with a remote on from the deck. If you do not hook that wire you will not get any sound. You can bypass the active speaker unit, just look for the wires that go into the active unit and cut and splice those to hook up new speakers.

What kind of speakers are you putting in? cause i have a 96 240 and the door speakers were a ***** then again i had crossover boxes to deal with. but the back ones all i had to do was take off the speakers covers by popping the pins things and then cut off the wire connection and connected new ones that the new speakers came with and bam new speakers. but that was a 96 and i dont know if that helps or it was a long story . good luck

Is the active speaker unit the factory amp that is found on each speaker?

Is it better to connect the speaker to this thing or would it be better to bypass the active speaker unit?

Yes. It depends on the head unit you have, if you're stil using the OE, you need the amps. If not, you can bypass it. On hatchback S13s, the rear amp is under the left rear speaker and runs both speakers. S13 coupes and S14s the amps are under the rear deck. All S13 front speaker amps are behind the speaker.

on the s14 i think its 6.5" all around. they are connected with some plastic male/female connectors, like others said just cut and restrip to connect. but make sure you are hooking up the positive and negative correctly or your speakers will be out of phase.

i put in speakers all around in my 95, the fronts were not that hard, i had 5 1/4" components (seperate tweeter) so i used the old plastic frames from the factory speakers and connected my speakers to them. i also had crossover boxes, i just put them below the speaker and wrapped them in foam to keep them off of the bottom for water, then ran the tweeter wires through the door where the rest of the wires go and up into the quarter strip where the tweeter place is, then i secured my new tweeters with metal cement.

I have an S13 fastback, so I'm kinda stuck with 4x6 unless I do some crafting to at least the front door speakers so I can get different speakers to fit. I want to get 6.5" for the doors since everyone seems to have good results from them but I can't find a write up. Anyone know if there's a write-up or have basic instructions? I should have most, if not, all the tools for the job.

Also, can anything be done about the rear speakers? I don't want to cut speaker holes in the rear trunk cover, so I'm wondering if I can somehow make use of the rear speaker slots.

In the front, cut a wood template to fill the opening, then mount the speaker in it. The rear can be done the same, but mount the template from underneath, keeping the edges sealed for better sound.

I don't know if someone already said this, i didn't read all the posts but places like circuit city sell speaker plug adaptors that use the stock plug to hook up to an aftermarket speaker.

Just an alternative to cuting and splicing.

You guys had it lucky, who ever owned my s14 before me cut the dang wiring harness in half. So I decided to run some 12 gauge speaker wire to all six speakers, plus then I decided to custom fit "also known as tin snippers, lol" some Alpine Type R series speakers in the rear deck. Let me tell you. . . not much fun.:bash

ok... first off, i have a s13 fastback and i cant get to the screws holding the rear speakers down. they are too close to the gaps. I gather that my car does in fact have factory amps? one in the rear and one behind each front speaker? How do I know if they're working?

Or a cheaper alternative(though harnesses tend to be cheap anyways) is to remove the connector from the factory speaker and solder a small amount of wire to the terminals. One for each, then on the other end of each wire, use the correspnding connector for your new speakers.
