My left rear caliper has developed a slow fluid leak and I'm thinking that the seal/boot around the piston must have a tear in it. I've never rebuilt a rear caliper, only fronts, and that twist in/out piston has me concerned. I looked in the FSM but they don't really discuss just replacing the boot/seal. In the diagram, the boot is the last thing to be installed, but the FSM never mentions installing it or how to install it properly.

Has anyone done this? I know someone is going to tell me to go buy a new/used caliper but I'm on a TIGHT budget at the moment and I can't afford to go spending $70 right now. Anyone know?

Honestly? I've never had to do this. I can tell you, how to get the piston out, but I doubt its the same method for getting it in.

i have the same problem, but i think the problem is not in the piston seal. i'm going to replace the piston becouse the seal marked 30 on the FSM diagram is not working and it's not for sale alone. i'm going to do that this week end (i hope). i'll tell you what happended

the complete piston here in Mexico is about $75 usd, i´m sure it's cheaper there.

piston comes out by unscrewing it out. When the piston's out, you'll see a bunch of snap rings behind it. You'll want a good set of snap ring pliers for it, trust me.

When reassembling the calipers, lube the sides of the piston with brake fluid and the inside of the boot with the grease that's supplied with the seal kit. Make sure the rubber ring on the inside of the piston (a little bit deeper than the boot) is also lubed up with brake fluid. Otherwise you can spend an hour scratching your head wondering why the piston isn't going in. Ha ha ha. I said "it isn't going in" ha ha ha
