I'm looking at buying this car, but it needs the piston rings replaced in one of the cylinders. I was wondering how much the labor cost of getting this done by a professional would be, thanks.

If it needs rings it may need cylinder bore and other work [bearings]. The pistons will need to come out and the heads removed. Might as well overhaul the whole engine or just replace it.

A decent job might be $2,000-2500 depends on what standards and longevity you want to pay for? Local labor rate vary but South LA [not CA in your case] ought to be inexpensive .

if it was mine id rering it. i like to do engine work(sometimes). if you are paying money to get it rebuilt(not worth taking apart just to rering) get it done somewhere good(dealer or nissan specialist) and get something concrete on paper. engine work is easy to mess up and expensive to mess up.

im guessing a nissan of some sort. the info is pretty much generic unless he is picking a car that is difficult to work on.

...good question though

mom's corolla is buring up oil like no tommorrow at 111k she always put 87 octane in it (never listens to me). mechanic thinks rings are definitely wasted. so how shot is that engine?

got a free weekend(or two). i have a buddy that recently slapped some rings in his corolla. its pretty easy. i rec you send the head to a machine shop(unless you have all the stuff yourself) and have them mill it flat, check it for cracks, and replace the valve stem seals. its really easy for an experienced mechanic.

Toyota supra, but I've since found a better car. Anyways, this guy seems kind of shady... first it was piston rings but all of a sudden its just the turbo seals... hmmm

oh well, I found a different supra

thanks guys
