I'm going to be replacing my ignition coil this week, so I already started looking at the job at hand. I noticed that the wire directly below, and connected, to the ignition coil has some really old electrical tape...should I replace this? If so then how do I go about doing it, or having a shop do it?

Why exactly are you replacing the coil?Forgive my bluntness, but it sounds like you don't really know much about auto mechanics, which is fine, neither do I, and NICO is a great place to learn a lot. I would suggest doing some more reading on the subject before haphazardly replacing things. (If you know that this part is broken or giving you problems, then ignore)That said, electrical tape is electrical tape- used for very minor insulation, keeping things organized and pretty, and securing loose wires. You should be just fine replacing tape. Its tape.Mmm tape.

The coil is easy enough to replace though. Using an aftermarket coil is NEVER a bad idea. Any chance you have to increase the efficiency of any system or sub system for relatively cheap and easy, you should take it.

When replacing the Shielding, chaff wrap, elect tape or whatever you want to call it, take care not to pull on the wires themselves. Also make sure not to cut the wire if you use a razor to remove the elec tape. Using a wire loom from auto zone can make cleanup very easy as this will protect and beautify the wire harness without the need to disconnect or retape anything. If it's in an area where it's exposed to alot of heat, use thermal wrap.

only thing I can add is to do the wiring mod while at it, again with making any system in the car perform better.

Could you change his name anyway? I think we'd all get a good laugh out of it (except maybe Nambla guy). :D

To the OP, I think the wire loom is a great idea and is something I've been wanting to do with my car. Clean up a bit of the underhood mess.

Also, if you're going all out with wiring you may want to check to see what condition your ground wires are in. You could get one of those universal ground kits, but if your wires are in OK shape you could just clean up the connections with sandpaper or steel wool and use some conductive grease.

Living in the NE, I know a lot of my grounds were VERY corroded.

I was told that it was my ignition coil, the problem is that whenever I hit about 3k (and up) my tach needle bounces as the engine revs up. Once it does that then it doesn't stop at all. If this isn't it, any suggestions? (i've already searched)

Gotcha, your original post didn't have as much info. In the future, any and all helpful info will tend to get better advice from the start and possible alternative fixes as well.Good luck with the car.
