Well, we have some awesome kids in our neighborhood that decided it would be fun to rob some vehicles Monday night. We had about 4 total in our 2 block radius that were broken into and trashed. Only one person actually had stuff stolen, and it happened to be prescription pain meds. The guy had an iPad in the back of his car and they didn't take that.

Anyways, they didn't take our screen or even any loose cash. I'm assuming my dog scared em away.

I'm checking to see if my homeowners insurance will help cover the damages since it happened on my property, my car insurance has a $500 deductible and I've already been quoted $375 to replace the window. Has anyone replaced a window themselves? I'm considering calling a junk yard to see if they have one, or buying the glass outright and doing it myself. I've taken door panels apart to wire up alarms and such, but never taken apart a regulator/window combo.

from my past experience(on other cars) its two clips/attachments to the window regulator mount. its a VERY tight/uncomfortable space to work in- but do-able.

just make sure when you remove your door panels to check your door handle & lock cables. i just removed my door panel to install my tint- and the silly cables were not on right, and i closed the door = didnt open LOLOLOL idk how- but out of sheer luck, they worked. i removed the door panel, and installed them right.

No luck finding just the glass... called around, $280 at a local shop.

Let's see if I can do better... the lady hates not having her car.

Ordered. Time to pull the driver's seat outta the Rogue and do some intense vacuuming. Not as intense as the guy removing all 4 seats and the carpet though :rotflmao

It's been in my backyard storage shed for the last few days. Poor car.

TINT THE GLASS while you have it out. then go back and do the passenger side as well.
it will be super easy to do if the glass is off the car.

I know you mentioned checking with your home insurance company, but did you check with your car insurance company? I had a nasty crack in my windscreen and it cost me nothing to replace it. A short phone call won't cost you more than a few minutes of your time, and may save you some hassle.

I called, they have a $500 comprehensive deductible. They said since the value of the glass is less then the deductible, they closed the claim. So I'm out of pocket.

I don't have any tint on me... I'll have to do it at another time.

I'm sure you've done it before but if not, try your google-fu and see if there's any shop around you that specialize with 2nd hand auto windows, some are actual stores and some are junk shop. I've done this many times and it's usually OEM parts, no damage and 70% cheaper than brand new with installation. With so many Nissan Rogue on the street, there's got to be a good supply of used parts from these type of stores.

I tried Nick. I live in a small town with a very limited number of shops and junkyards. Nobody had just the glass available, and the cheapest shop was $280 for them to order glass then install.

The DIY option was my best bet. Tomorrow I'll be ripping apart the Rogue and cleaning out the door/carpet with a shop vac. Having only 1 car sucks right now. Carpooling to work with the wife and dropping the kids off at daycare. I have to leave the house a full hour before work and my work is 5 miles away.

1. pop off the small square cap behind the mental door handle(used to open the door). there is a bolt behind there
2. pop off the long plastic silver door handle trim- 2 bolts under there.
3. pull the whole door trim off, and up.

thats how you get the door panel off.

Get a quote at http://www.glass.net

I used them for for the cheapest price when I had the windshield on my Frontier replaced out of pocket. They are quoting $202 for your replacement if it were here with free mobile service.

There wasn't any dealers in my area, checked that place too :(

So I pulled the seat and the door panel for some cleaning this weekend. Glass everywhere. Sooo many small pieces. I'm still not done, I gotta get some attachments for the shop vac to get inside the door better. This install will be interesting though. The window regulator and motor is bolted up to a plastic piece on the door that's used for sound deadening. You unbolt the 8 or so bolts, and the whole regulator assembly comes out with it. There are 2 bolts holding the window in place. One is gonna be impossible to get to, I may need a ratcheting crescent wrench, something I don't have sadly. other one is cake.

Just waiting for the window to get here and I'll be installing it. Oh, for future reference, every bolt is 10mm. Bolt to remove the door panel from the door, and every bolt holding on the plastic piece and to the regulator.

Pics later.

****edit**** Seats are held in by 4 T-50 Torx bolts.

Window is in and working great. I didn't get a chance to take that many pictures, but I'll post a general walkthrough.

Tools i used:
10mm Socket w/ ratchet (1/2" drive is fine)
10mm Open ended wrench
Phillips Screwdriver
Door panel poppers http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-up ... 99739.html
Radio Flyer Wagon
Beer

--------------------------------------------------

First, prepare wagon by filling with ice and insert beer.

Image

Next, follow ImStricken's post above on how to remove the door panel. Panel poppers work great for releasing the clips from the door. There's quite a few and they're all the way around the door.

I personally unscrewed the door handle assembly and let it hang rather then removing the cables.

Remove the bolts on the black plastic piece, 10mm, to gain access to the regulator like so.

Image

The cables to the regulator came off the pulley system because the weight from the window was gone. It was a pain to get them back on, but once it was the regulator worked like normal.

The window is attached to the regulator by 2 10mm bolts. I found it easier to use the phillips screwdriver to remove/install these.

Image

Image

Long story short, I had a buddy of mine hold the window in place while myself and another friend lined up the window with the regulator. Once it was lined up, just inserted the screws and bolted the black panel back. That's pretty much it. Took no longer then 45 minutes. We had a lot of beer left, so some drinking in the front yard continued :)

It really wasn't bad man. I psyched myself out over it. After taking off the 10 10mm bolts off the plastic piece, it looked easy. I spent more time cleaning the car and removing the driver's seat to get all the glass then I did putting the window in. There's still bits in places I couldn't get... and I assume it'll be like that for awhile. I still have glass in my Lancer from when that window was broken into and that was in Feb 2012.

Man, you're sure having some bad luck with windows. It's a shame the insurance wouldn't cover the repairs. It's a racket I've never understood. I mean a random stone is kicked up cracking my windshield and it's covered with no cost, but someone deliberately vandalizes a side window trying to take your stuff, and your expected to foot the bill for repairs. Makes no sense.

he could have went with his insurance. but it would have required him to pay the $500 deductible - for a $400 mechanic's job or a $200 DIY repair. it doesnt always make sense to use your insurance, if you can fix it yourself.

I ended up paying $100 for the window and a DIY :)

I changed my comprehensive deductible to $50 from $500. Change in premium? $17 annually. I can live with that.

Oh and wanna talk about bad luck with windows? My friend has a 2013 WRX. Rock chipped his windshield bad, so he had it replaced.

That's windshield 1.

Windshield 2 - Bass rattles rear view mirror off, cracks windshield and pulls off layers of glass. (my old setup, 1 12" Audioque and 1200 watts of power)

Windshield 3 - Same (replaced with a 10" boston acoustic, 300 watts)

Windshield 4 - Same, however the heat caused the rear view mirror to crack the glass. He's pissed. Windows 3 and 4 were OEM from Subaru. Windshield 2 was a cheap replacement.
