I'm getting a very unpleasant thunk from the rear...definitely sounds like I need new diff mount isolators. I know I can use 300zx poly bushings, so I'm planning to order a set. My question is can I replace these without actually removing the diff? Is it possible to just support the diff, lower it a bit, and swap the bushings, or do I need to drop it completely?

The bushings in the subframe are of course the toughest. You must remove driveshaft to allow diff to move forward whuke being suoourted on transmission jack....................might as well remove it to get working room to drive out bushings.

MoD- are you sure it's note the forward subframe bushings? for those, there is a relatively simple work-around (not a cure, but a band-aid) to install the subframe collars. you have probably heard about that already, but you might consider the poly collars (sold by sponsor FRSport) which don't have a gap once installed. if you go with the poly, use some moly grease where the upper collar contacts the frame to reduce the inevitable squeaking.

I actually haven't crawled under the car to check yet (it got cold and I'm a wimp).

I'm fairly sure it's the differential bushings, since the only time I get thunks is on very hard shifts. Aside from that everything's quiet, smooth, and tight.

Thanks for the heads up, though. I'll definitely check the subframe bushings when I crawl under to take a closer look.

Buy me a lift, then. Or convince the hippies running shops these days to let me onto the shop floor.
