You only need to remove the one piece around the shifter and the two switches are attached to the back of it. Use a padded flathead screwdriver to gently pry up the cover. You'll see the location of the pawls in the FSM.
Unplug both switches and take it to your kitchen table. Give yourself lots of space. Seriously, I took apart a switch trying to do the same as you and you need to be a good solderer to get to the bulb. There's at least 6 or 7 wires running over the top and at least 2 of them will have to come out. This of course is after you've pried the assembly loose and broken at least 3 or 4 of the fragile plastic tabs holding it all together. It's all pretty self-explanatory once you get the switch in your hand. I didn't attempt the solder job.
As far as the replacement bulbs for the rest of the car, there are different style and color bases (see the pic) but so far (in my experiences) the bulbs all appear to be the same. I've changed out the two odometer bulbs and lights in all the door mounted switches.
The pic below shows the bulbs, Radio Shack #272-1092, which is a #7219 12v Micro Lamp. $1.29/pair. I use the red plastic screwdriver, made from a stick in a cracker and cheese handi-pack, to adjust the bulb with the lights on before putting eveything back together. Don't use a metal screwdriver to install these. If you forget that your lights are on you'll burn fuses and be chasing electrical gremlins (Been there, done that). Good luck.
