Hello,

I currently have the Pilot HX MXM4 P245/45 R18 tires. I need to get new ones. I have done enough research to get the impression that these tires aren't the best. I went from a Honda Accord to the Q45 so I just assumed that the hydroplaning and fish tailing around the curves was my fault for not knowing how to drive a car with more than 100 hp. I digress.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I don't do anything crazy anymore while driving...no street races. I live in Atlanta so I get a lot of sun and rain depending on the time of the year. I drive about 80 on the freeways and I drive a lot of s-curve type terrains. I don't mind paying up for a tire but I don't need to pay an extra $50 per tire so that I can hit a curve in the rain at 100 mph.

Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance

The problem with Atlanta is it gets below 50F [limit for Summer tires] in winter [fall and spring] and thus Summer tires are risky especially in the cold wet periods.

You might find the AVON 550 A/S a suitable tire for you at ~~$150 each from: Hard to beat this tire unless you spend another $75-$100 each in your size.Tire Rackhttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/...A%2FS

Jamesmost has Avons on his Q. (G50) He said he liked them. Maybe he'll chime in.

Both the Avon 500 (now available in 245/45-18) and Avon 550 are good tires for the money!

However, if you want something outstanding to avoid hydroplaning and excellent wet weather handling, then the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 is the best that I have used in a while.

See my thread on 245/45-18 tires in the M45 forum for more information: zerothread/198905 ... I have more comments there too. These tires will also fit your Q45 just fine!

i think for his application, something like the michelin pilot sport A/S might be in order.....

Continental ContiExtremeContact might be another option..

Just get onto tirerack, select ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE ALL SEASON and HIGH PERFORMANCE ALL SEASON and see what you come up with....

Youll probably want an all season tire because driving UHP tires in the cold can be bad on them.... It doesnt sound like you need a hardcore tire, just a nice tire that can handle rain... those michelin tires suck, but not quite as bad as the goodyear RSA.

if you wanted to go with a summer tire, then you probably dont need anything higher than a ultra high performance summer....

Id search for tires in sizes 245-45-18, 255-45-18 and 255-40-18.... Hell, i bet you could run 265-40-18 all the way around.... Some would disagree with me on that (as far as mounting them on the rim), but thats not to say you cant do it...

I suggest Goodyear Tripletreds. They are 80K tires not a high speed rated, proformance tire. but if you are looking for a good quite ride and excellent traction in different weather conditions they can not be beat. I just put a set on my brides 96 j30 they were $560 out the door at just tires. It might cost a bit more for the Q. I am running the Goodyear Assurance on my Q and have been very happy (same tire without the all weather tread.) I would have bought the tripletreds but they had just been introduced at the time I replaced my tires and were not available.

Give them a serious look

Yeah ... till he takes those S-curve type terrains he mentioned! In the rain!

Please do not exceed the maximum tire width for your rim width ... best advice I can ever give anyone!

That and "all season tire" is a marketing euphemism for compromised summer tire and not very good winter tire.

Note in Tire rack tests that all most all summer tires will outperform their all-season bretheren.

Finally, remember your tires are the only thing that interface with the road. Skimp here, and it doesn't matter what else you do as you may not have the grip required. Stick to Michelin, Goodyear, Continentals, or Bridgestone. Look at the top performance tire from each manufacturer, then choose your comprimises.

I have the Tech M500 on another car and like them. But they are not a PS2, which I also have on a FYG33, very similar suspension to the F50.

Also, remember that when you put a too wide tire on a narrow rim, the tire edges actually pull up a bit. And, it changes the section profile of the tire as a result and the tread width that is in contact with the ground. (Attempting to compensate for this by lowering the tire pressure takes you into the domain of insufficient load index.)

In extreme situations, the actual contact width with the ground may indeed be less than a tire designed for the particular width of the rim (although the given contact area will stay the same).

So, a tire that is correct for the rim may thus give you better performance too! Not just the safety and handling issues!
