I'm having a buddy of mine build a prototype transmission mount to replace the flimsy Top Hat RB25 mount that allows the drive train to bounce around like a kid on crack. I am looking for some input on the transmission isolator.

1) What are the purposes of a transmission isolator besides vibration dampening to the body? I was thinking about designing the mount to bolt directly to the transmission after the stock isolator is removed.

2) Is anyone else interested in one of these if I have several made? It would be for the RB25. I have no idea what it will cost at this point, but I want to feel out the level of interest.

After reading the title, I was assuming using some Flexane and casting your own with US Grade 8 hardware. Not the most beautiful option, but would work well.

Other than isolating the vibration, it is used to hold up the transmission / rear of the engine. Not sure what else to tell you!

Sorry if those were not the answers you were looking for. :-\

I considered that as an option for the OEM isolator, but anyone can fill theirs if they feel the need. I am also looking for a cleaner option but haven't found anything that fits the application yet.

I did some searching on some drag racing sites and a lot of racers frown on solid transmission mounts because they put too much stress on the transmission housing causing them to crack. A lot of guys also said that solid mounts should only be used in conjunction with a mid-transmission mount and a rigid frame car (race chassis).

Therefore, I'm leaning towards sticking with the OEM isolator filled with Flexane for simlpicity. I can always find a better urethane isolator solution down the line. For now, I just need to take the slop out of the transmission mount.

I feel a design like Macks solid mount is a great start. However I would have welded a stud into the mount sticking up. For the solid puck I'd have some rubber/poly material on the base and top of the mount. Maybe 1/8" thick to suck up a few vibrations.

The mount design will be complete today so it should be fabricated next week for test fitting. I'm also getting in touch with a company to make an isolator that matches the RB25 isolator but for a high hp application. I will keep everyone up to speed and hopefully be able to add pics next week!!

So the tophat transmission mount gives those problems to everybody? Is it because the metal is so damn thin?

Right on! Trying to hold a 500+lb engine and transmission still under hard acceleration and braking cannot be done with the wimpy 1/8" steel plate on the TopHat mount. A stiff suspension makes it even worse.
