Are we able to still get a factory replacement external trans filter to replace the existing external filter for a 91 Q? When the previous owners had the transmission replaced under warranty, the dealership also installed an external filter that is bolted to the inside passenger frame rail in the engine compartment. It looks the same as the external filters that came with the 94-96 Qs.

I bought one from http://www.everythinginfiniti.com a few years ago, it was around $90 if I recall- comes as a complete kit with new hoses and bracket- simple to replace, 10 minutes max once on lift. Oddly, very few here seem to ever replace theirs....they seem more concerned about the coarse screen in the transmission pan, when the external filter is a much, much finer filtering medium and will clog light-years before the screen.

Here is the internal filter kit: http://www.infinitipartsusa.co...=3221

You should replace the external filter with a OEM one which is a bit expensive at $99 from Infiniti Of Scottsdale or $132.32 MSRP. You might be able to use a Magnefine filter in place of the OEM external filter used by the previous owner. But I am a bit confused about the relief spring used to prevent reduced oil flow from a clogged filter.

Yeah, I'm currently using a Magnafine on my Q. I figured that I'd replace it in about 12,000 miles. I'd like to tee in a trans pressure gauge on the outlet side of the filter so that I can monitor the gradual decrease in pressure before it becomes a problem. The 91Q has a couple of additional lines running to and from the filter into the radiator and then back to the transmission. I figured that if it wasn't too expensive that I'd just replace the current external filter with another of the same type to save having to cap off lines. I believe the radiator in the 91 has dual heat exchangers for the transmission fluid. One on each end.

I would tee in the sending unit for the transmission temperature gauge after the cooler (Cooler outlet line).

Whats there to be confused about? most oil filters include this type of bypass to allow oil to circulate if filter becomes clogged- just change filter at reasonable intervals and you will not have any issues.

I want to use a pressure gauge so that I can monitor the drop in pressure after the filter on the transmission line but I think it would be nice to have a temp gauge also for the transmission. At that point of time I'd guess I could just get a pillar pod set-up and install a trans temp, trans press, and an oil pressure gauge.

The spring used on the filters seems to be universal but not all transmission run under the same pressure right? How do we know it will put the filter into bypass mode in time before starving the reservoir on the power steering or the transmission's sun gears?

The power steering system on the Q runs at a max pressure of 1000 PSI and the transmission runs at 219 MAX PSI. Now I am not sure what the PSI is for the return system on both transmission and power steering but hopefully someone that does will chime in.

Return line on both is very low pressure, I bet 35psi or less. You could email magnefine and get answers to your questions, but I have never heard of any issues- Ford thinks so highly of them that they relabel them with a ford part number and require all dealers to install one on every warranty rebuild transmission that leaves a ford dealer.

I just got off the phone with someone at Magnefine. He said when there is a 6 PSI difference between the inlet and outlet the filter goes into bypass mode. The filters were originally designed as transmission filters but then people started using them as power steering filters. He also said people use them as hydraulic fluid filters as well.

They also have a NEW Magnefine Performance Edition Filter for $100 which is made from aluminum and has a replaceable $13 cartridge.

That's some good info Paul. So I guess if I am to get a trans pressure gauge to monitor the pressure, I will need one that reads down to individual pounds to really see a difference so that I can change the filter before it starts to go into bypass mode. Do they even make a gauge that precise for transmission oil pressure?

just change the filter at recommended intervals {just like any filter} and you will be fine. If your transmission is producing enough wear material to clog the filter quickly......it does not really matter much as the transmission is self destructing and will be toast soon anyways.

I was just reviewing the thread and noticed that I have a duplicate post at the end. I just wanted to note that I don't know why that happened.
