My Recent experience was similar to those posted. I detected the noise at slower speeds and coming to a stop at 16k Miles. I complained to my wife because I knew all the noises of the car and was happy. Six hours latter the Engine light went on. I took the car to the dealer and gave a discription like this: On slower speeds at about 12-20 mph while turning or pulling up to a stop sign I was hearing a rattle or scraping and thought at the time it was a suspension problem. Oh and the Light went on.

The result: The dealer plugged the car in and found some messages. They called Nissan. Then took the car for a test ride in a parking lot. Bad Trans and they had 2 in the same week. Transmission Replaced BUT NOW I have a differential piched noise that is distraction at 25 to 30 mph an even worse at 60 to 65 mph to the point where the tone has risen to a music tone loud level and distorts music listening. It happens under load and seems to go somewhat quiet downhill. This is NOT acceptable, the humm sounds like a very bad differential I once had in one of my Lincolns.

I took the car back and issued a complaint and the mechanic admitted to hearing the same thing in my car only. NOT the other he replaced in the same week in an AWD 2008 same model same mechanic. They advised me to take the car on a trip East instead of my normal full sized road car to see if the issue resoves itself or lessens. NO it seems worse after 599 miles and I am not happy sounding like a truck with the Whine low and HighI opened the widows and it is even worse than I thought.

Question: If the tran was set wrong or off the bubble to the rear drive could this cause a whine at different frequencies and speeds? Was it a bad install of a new trans? He told me it took him 11 hrs alone and he got help on the other car and finished in 7 and Nissan only gives 6 hrs labor. He was not a happy camper. Is the installation to precise to be done in the field. Was my car the practice unit and the other that did not whine the expert install?

I was a very happy Nissan Rogue owner until 2 weeks ago. Told everyone how smooth and quiet the unit ran. How good it looked and sounded. How it was a good light utility car for retired person wanting to take small garden plants from the garden center and transport them home without having to stoop and unload items. I had people my age thinking that the car would make them look like a cool grandpop because my grandchildren think the car is realy cool even more so than our luxury sedan.

Any sugguestions would be helpfull.

I split this as a separate thread. Perhaps others can comment about their replacement CVT experiences.

We have over 7,000 miles on our new transmission. No noises, no nothing. I think your noise is something totally different. Press the issue with the dealer or get a second opinion with a different dealer.

I'm curious, has anyone had their CVT replaced due to the high rpm, highway speed "whine" noise that seems to get worse in hot weather, and all but disappear in cool temperatures? Some have described this noise as "common in higher mileage CVT's", perhaps even implying that it is "normal" but I'm not so sure.

I have developed this noise over time as my FWD CVT has aged, but It's only got about 45,000 km on the CVT so it's definately not high mileage. When cruising on the highway in warm weather you can hear a persistent but very low volume whine. It isn't alarming and sounds somewhat normal except for the fact that the noise didn't exist from new. If you step down on the gas and raise the rpms above 3000 the whine gets very loud, and as you approach 5000+ rpms it's extremely loud.

I'm not overly concerned, the CVT seems to function very well, I get amazing fuel economy and no noises in around-town driving. I also have the 10-year warranty on the CVT but this only covers internal CVT failures, not parts they consider external such as the valve body which in my mind is a component of the CVT even though it's not internal. Any thoughts and experience with this would be appreciated, otherwise I'll see how it things go through another hot summer of driving and see what happens. Thank you.

let me ask you this important question, does it whine in PARK or NEUTRAL? (sometimes you have to give it gas to hear it in that RPM range) because this could be a torque converter problem too

You read my mind, I've never tested this but I should have. We've got cool temps this week so I'll wait until it warms up a bit to test. I find it strange what a direct impact the outside temp has, it doesn't have to be a sweltering hot day, just 60 to 70 Degrees F is enough to make the noise show.

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated, I'll report back later this spring with some more info!

ambient temps can begin to thin fluids out fairly quickly while its in service inside the engine or transmission.
i remember the transmission in my 2002 maxima would start shifting hard, and holding gears longer when outside it would be hot. i ended up installing a large transmission cooler for the fluid and it solved all my issues. was an awesome quick install - but yielded amazing results. did a write-up on another forum and the guys came back with similar results that ended up following in my footsteps.

with this new cvt fluid - who really knows its true viscosity levels. it could be sensitive beyond belief.

i used to have a 1998 ford crown victoria patrol car issued to me when i was a rookie that whined louder than my prisoners lol it would do it while in park or drive. it got louder as the RPM's got louder. was the most annoying thing in the world.
