At around 127.2k, my steering wheel was shaking back and fourth at highway speeds, and under braking it would shake from side to side also. It wasnt the brakes or anything, they are fine. Changed out the tie-rods to these MOOG greasable ones i got. I got it pretty close and i dont need an alignment, but im going to get one again soon after i replace the control arm ball joints and other crap in the front end. Replacing these have removed the shaking in the wheel and all is normal again.

Each one of these is like $35.99 at advance auto. I also got some general purpose lube as a filler item to get me to $75, then used a 30 off coupon so this job with tax is only about $48 to do.

If none of you know, i'll fill you in as i use these coupons almost every week for the past year ordering online and then choosing in store pickup. I easily saved over a grand doing this and i love it.

Search online for advance auto promo codes, you'll find a couple. The ones i always use are 10 off 30, 20 of 50, 30 off 75, and 40 off 100 ( the last one might not be around anymore ) but the others are usually always available.

SO if you didn't know, now you do, it saves me a TON of cash, and im happy to share it with you guys on here.

Anyways onto the job - it really only takes about an hour to do, and most of that time is removing the wheels and putting them back on. Other than that, take off the cotter pin, remove nut, you will need to hit the balljoint end with a hammer to pop it out, probably a couple of times as i did, now put it back in the hole, and i used an adjustable craftsman wrench to hold the bolt, and then i used a pipe wrench on the 2 flat part side of the tie rod, hit that with a rubber mallet 1-2 times and then spin it off, replace with new one, screw in zerk fittings, retorque the nut, insert cotter pin, put your wheels back on and done!. I used a tape measure to measure from the nut to the middle of the balljoint part of the tierod to get the new ones back on as close as possible.

The 40 off 100 code is "ccabin" less the quotes. Just used it last week on a battery for my gal's volvo.

Hmm, weird that that solved your wheel shake issues. But hey if it worked it worked!

Why do you say that? Did you have the same issue and it was something else? Or do you still have it

Have you replaced your inner tie rods? I'm thinking about getting both done since if I'm going to replace the outter I might as well do the inner as well.

Usually with tire/wheel shake its tire balance/ball joints never heard of a tie rod causing that kinda shake.

Ive never heard of a tie rod causing wobble either.

I also wouldnt assume your car still has a good alignment either. Tires arent cheap and alignments are finicky and you cant gaurantee a machined and remanufactured suspension piece is exactly the same. The overall length of the piece, or length of threaded rod or even the taper not sitting the same in the knuckle to me would make big differences.

I always count on getting an alignment after any parts that can change the alignment are replaced, I just ended doing it most all at once and get it aligned then and be sure everything is set right and you get the most out of your tires and ride.
