Well... I successfully completed my first DIY project on my own. Well, not on my own (my brother-in-law helped), but without the help of a professional mechanic or a NICO expert on site.

Of course, the step-by-step instructions from tangalora helped a lot. So, I can't say I wen't completely without the help of NICO... just, no on-site NICO help.

Anyway... the buzz "like a swarm of angry bees" coming from my back seat is gone. And, wow, is it a lot quieter in my car. Also, I noticed a significant difference in performance. Is that common? The Q seems to have a little more pep when I step on the gas... less lag between stepping on gas and when I feel acceleration.

Should I assume that the fuel filter needs to be replaced?

Congratulations!

We are here, if you need us, though.

DEFINITELY replace the filter, every other oil change!

I'm sorry? It sounded like you said, "every other oil change". You simply must be mistaken, I'm pretty sure I have no record of it every being done... let me check my ultimate Q maintenance schedule.

Hah! I knew it. Every 15,000 miles... thats every 5 oil changes. Wait a second... thats still like, ummm, 120,000 miles over due.

Ok... really I am an idiot and I should have consulted the schedule before asking the question. Thanks for answering so politely though... obviously it needs to be done.

Oh, make no mistake about it... there was **** spewing everywhere. Luckily it was gasoline so it evaporated quickly and killed a few brain cells, but no further harm was done.

Though... my brother-in-law did bring over a kerosene garage heater... luckily we didn't turn it on. The fire hazard didn't occur to us until AFTER we had doused ourselves in flamable liquid.

Also just completed the fuel pump replacment. Got sort of frustrated when I broke off a tab for the gas gauge indicator and it didnt work, but we pulled it out and zip tied it down and now it seems to work fine.

BTW, greetings too the forum. My Q was actually my fathers old car, and after agreeing to replace the fuel filter for him and driving it around town a few days I decided to take it (He just got a 2006 Legacy GT and loves it). Next up I will be doing the chain guides over winter break, and then look at suspension upgrades over spring break.

This DIY job, was what helped me feel I can work on the Q, if I do the research, put in the time and get the right parts/tools I can work on the Q.

Yes, fuel filter should be replaced as well, but did you do the O-ring?

Per the recommendation of... well, EVERYONE, I did replace the O-Ring. To be honest, I am not sure why. The one I took out looked like it could have been brand new.

But, in Tangalora's article she said the same thing about hers. So, I assume there is a reason I replaced it... despite the fact that I couldn't tell the difference.

Ross man, you gotta take our word from those who have learned the hard way.. I didnt replace my O ring and I had gas smell in my car for a few months..... I remember it was so bad at one time my eyes started watering.... it was ugly times.....

When its something so cheap and so easy, its best to replace it even if you may not understand why.

Wow... I am glad I did. I breathed enough gas while trying to feed the pump assembly back in to the tank. Looking down through that hole in the rear deck... there was no place for the fuel fumes to go but straight in to my lungs/blood/brain.

Despite killing several million brain cells... and getting a case of wobbly knees after pulling my head out of the car... I still managed to reassemble the car without incident.

Just think about your brain cells from a darwinistic standpoint (I dont believe that crap BTW), but if certain brain cells were not able to handle the excessive hydrocarbon fumes, they were obviously inferior and should have been destroyed anyway.... Survival of the fittest...

im uneffected by anything that a car gives off by now.... Gasoline, ATF, anything that comes from a car and reeks no longer effects me........
