So today, myself along with one of my friends that owns an interior shop replaced my back window. Wasn't that bad of a job. I got the window from topsonline.com for $180 with shipping. We also used some black dye that he had laying around from a previous customer and spray dyed the whole top. So, rear window is new, the top looks new. Overall i'm extremely happy. Here are the pics and sorry for the dirty *** car...

Now, here is my question. I just got done tinting my car on 20%. I want to tint the rear window but the tint shops here are saying the tint won't work all that well on the plastic. So, what do I do to tint it? I know that you can get a transparent black in a spray can that you would normally use to blackout taillights. I just wanted to check here before I went off and sprayed the inside of the window. Anyway, if you guys have any info, please let me know.

Good job. Well, I think you should have started with tinted plastic window from the begin with. I would use spray or film on brand new plastic window. I'd leave it as it is.

i actually tried finding some tinted plastic. My friend tried every source that he had, and everyone either was completely out, or they didn't make one. My window was just to the point of completely falling out, so I had to do it now, lol. I kept the old window to try the tint, I'm just not sure how that's going to work. I'm more or less looking to try and find someone who has already done this. Anyone? And they guys at the tint shop here in town said that the film won't work well with the vert rear window. Anyone know if this is true?

Thanks for the reply and the compliment.

I'm very positive that it's true. It might look nice at first, but the film won't stand the heat and all those bendings when you drop the top. Sometimes, things are better untouched.

I remember seeing one of the members vert has tinted plastic window on it.

i got my top from topsonline and i think they sell the tinted back window. i have gone to a tint shop and they said the same thing. the film will begin to come undone within days. im not sure about the spray tinting, i would try it 1st on a plastic similar to your window and see how that looks. good job on the install.

Looks great! Everyone pretty much said everything i'd say about the tinted rear window so i'll leave it at that. Do you have a polish for it? If not, i'd suggest you get one ASAP.

Plexus or Zaino. I haven't used either personally (yet) but I heard great things about both of them.

VHT makes some great products for smoking tail lights and painting calipers but i'm not too certain on that spray on tint application.

Where window tints are concerned, I honestly think it's best if one leaves it to a reputable professional place to do it.

thanks for the compliments guys. I'm going to check into that spray some more. The last thing I want to do is mess the back window up. I'll call him and ask what kind of dye it was. I'll get back with you guys.

Here is a direct quote from VHT's site. And I don't think I will be doing this. Just seems to skechy. Not that I question my ability, just the product....

How to:

Clean glass thoroughly with a non-waxy glass cleaner. Be sure to remove all dust and lint from the surface. If lint or dust is left on surface of glass, VHT Window Tint will flow around the particle leaving a streak. Mask completely around the area to be treated with the proper tape and paper. Paper mask should extend at least 18 inches around the border of the area to be treated. Tape at least 12 sheets of newspaper together or use a heavy poly drop cloth to make a trough at the bottom of the area to be treated. Securely tape thoroughly to ensure a seal.

Surface to be treated must be in a vertical position. Shake can for one minute after marble is heard. Hold can approximately 5 inches from the surface at a slight downward tilt. Start at the top left corner and spray horizontally to the right and back again. Continue this pattern while overlapping the previous row. Stop spraying approximately 4 inches from the bottom and allow coating to flow downward. Heavy coats work best. NOTE: This product is not a paint and must flow (run) downward to give smooth, even coverage. Bubbles and small streaks will disappear as the Window Tint dries (if window was properly cleaned). VHT Window Tint dries in 8 hours. Unwanted coating (over spray) can be removed with a paint thinner within 4-5 hours

yeah.. it will probably be close to the same outcome of trying to spraypaint your car with a glossy color

well if I did the inside of the window, I'd still have that glossy look on the outside. I'm just not sure if it would run down or off the plastic.

That is probably the cleanest vert top I've ever seen... I wouldn't risk spraying that brand new window, though. I would just order a tinted one and when it came in, I'd sell the clear one to someone else to defray the cost of having to redo it. [/my 2 cents]

It looks great. You just motivated me to fix mine. Can you give me some insight on how it's done? Would greatly appreciate it.

Did you tint the front window too? I know the plastic window will be hard to tint but i would just tint everything except the back window.
