Dear all,

I was recently replacing the Right front low beam headlight in my 2002 QX4 and noticed that after replacing the battery, the radio is no longer working normally. When I turn the key a loud "beep" is heard from the speakers and the radio display does not come on. The radio can be turned on and adjusted via the controls on the steering wheel, but again no display and the buttons on the radio face itself are not operational.

All other systems are working fine. I checked basic fuses so far. Any ideas are really appreciated!

:welcome: to NICO!

You might try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it again in an attempt to "reset" something in the radio. I assume we're talking about the factory radio?

Any chance you hooked up the battery terminals backwards for a second before catching it and correcting them?

Thanks for the reply Heath. Yeah I was thinking about trying that.

Yes factory Bose radio w/ 6CD changer. I am 99.9% sure I didnt do anything like that, but was thinking I would see some other blown fuses or something similar if I did? Do you know of a replaceable fuse on the radio or somewhere else that could be causing this?

Either way it makes the money I saved on getting a deal on my headlight bulb replacement not seem so great anymore...

At least on an '02 PF, the Bose is run by two fuses: #4 (always hot) and #10 (switched).

Disconnecting the battery is a good idea. Leave it disconnected for several minutes.

You disconnected BOTH leads to the battery? One would have been overkill. If you disconnect just one, disconnect the
black one (no big sparks if the wrench slips and shorts to the body work).

If you hooked the battery up backwards, you fried the alternator diodes.

Thanks Chuck. Where are those fuses located?

Yeah had to disconnect both leads as I had to remove the battery to get access to the headlight panel. Crazy tight space and you dont want to bang around Xenon bulbs...

Will try to disconnect the battery again and post if it fixes the problem.

Sorry, I missed your reply on May 03. I'm glad the power down reset worked.

FTR, the radio fuses are in the primary fuse box, which is over the driver's left knee. (There's also fuses in at least one
of the relay boxes under the hood).

Wow. This is EXACTLY what happened to me. I was replacing the headlight bulbs in my '02 QX4 and had to remove the air filter unit to get to the driver's side bulb, and the battery to get to the passenger side. And, sadly, I still have problems with the driver's side headlight, meaning I probably have a ballast issue.

Anyway, I had the same problem with the radio afterwards. I could control it from the steering wheel, but none of the controls on the radio itself would work. And, it beeped every time I turned the ignition on. I'll try the battery reset, and see if that works.

I love this forum!
