Pretty sure my cats are toast and I wanna either cut them out and weld in a pipe and put a glass pack farther down the pipes or replace the catbacks with the glass packs directly. But will the glass packs get too hot? Or is there another solution you recommend?

Dont wanna do a full exhaust replacement as I will eventually get a TT and do it then .

TIA

All of your exhaust parts get really hot, but none really any more than others. I mean, other than ones closer to the hot engine and ones further from the engine. The catalytic converters get just as hot as the glass packs you'd replacing them with. What makes you say the cats are toast and why wouldn't you replace them with newer cats?

I'm going with the idea that they are clogged and it will fix the low rpm power drain and weird smell coming from my car when said power drain happens. So I wanna cut them out and replace them and see if it fixes the problem.

Oh, I have heard that smelling like rotten eggs means a mucked up cat. Good luck with your swap. Consider getting working cats, they're good for the air we breath. Plus they make your O2 sensors happy so ECU can run optimal and provide better gas mileage, response and power. Back to the original question, all parts will be just as hot, no matter what piping you run, afaik.

I appreciate the info. Looking at a diagram you are correct, plus the cat is fairly far away from the engine so even if heat was a factor I am more comfortable with it being farther away. Put some cheap as temp mufflers on my Z and those things smoked like a Mother F*****r. Thought I blew a engine that blew another engine. In short , gunna cut the cat and H pipe and get some real long glass packs.

A pretty tried and true method for finding a clogged cat is to use an ir thermometer and temp the exhaust. If its clogged, all the exhaust up to the engine will be hotter (usually about 200 degrees) than everything after the clog. Typically on a properly firing cat, the exhaust coming out of it will be a few degrees higher (or about the same) than the exhaust pre cat.

Another ghetto test is to pull the oxygen sensor and go for a drive, if it runs better you have a clog. Try one bank then the other then both. Sounds pretty terrible but its a lot easier and cheaper than mutilating your exhaust on a whim.

I like your suggestions, I'm gunna go with option number 2 cuz its cheap, quick and easy. Like me on a Saturday night.

Baddum Tss! :chuckle:

I like that O2 sensor idea. Good process of elimination!
