replace rear boot or whole axle?

My 300ZX has a rear outer boot that is split on the drivers side. I was told by a mechanic that replacing just the boot would not usually work because it is hard to keep the replacement boot from leaking. I was told the best option is to replace the axle instead. Anyone have input on whether this is correct or not?

A couple things here:
1. That axle has 175K on it. Its probably has considerable wear anyway.
2. How long has it been open? Dirt and water have gotten in, and grease has gotten out. The bearing surfaces are now even further affected.
3. New axles can often be found so cheap these days, that its just not worth it to replace a boot.

Thanks for the advice. When I asked if they would be using OEM or aftermarket, he said that even Nissan will be using aftermarket since they are not producing this axle for the 1990 z any longer. Is that really the case?
Also, if the passenger side is still intact, should I leave it alone or change both axles?
NOTE:
I bought my Z new in 1990 but it hasn't been my daily driver for years. I may put 700 mile a year on it now.

1990 was a long time ago.
There are a lot of parts out of production, and for cars much newer than yours.
I haven't put a factory axle in a car in years. All the cheap import parts killed all the factory axles.

Unless its causing a vibration or has some other problem, no need to address it.

Thanks for the advice.
Any recommendations of after-market axles to consider or stay away from?

Not really. I think they're all about the same.
