OK, my rack & pinion unit's been leaking for about a year now. I tried some leak eliminating fluids and thicker types, but now it's just getting almost empty weekly. Some odd play and knock sounds are coming from the steering, so it's time for action.

My '93 240SX SE has 123000 miles, should I try to change the seals or replace the whole unit?

I was checking the factory manual and changing the seals seems to be very complicated, and probably unreliable.

What's your recomendation?

Hi Lost_To_A_K-Car:

That's another thing, should I trust a rebuilt or replacement unit or should I get a genuine Nissan unit?

Decisitions, decisitions man.

I hope that at Courtessy Nissan a respectable unit is available. Up to now, they get the stuff.

I suppose I'll do a mega search, what about where I could call or navigate?

It's where I could call or go in the internet to find the rack & pinion at low prices.

I've spoken with a few Nissan techs about rebuilt racks. Even the Nissan racks you buy new are rebuilt, so they can't be that bad. Usually when a rack is leaking bad enough they'll recommend a new one instead of a rebuilding it because the seals never take right.

Alright, the course has been chosen.

A Nissan racing fan (the guy had a 300ZX, a 280ZX and, for a while, one of the few Skylines ever to make it here) told me of a shop that specialices in rebuilding and replacing racks, CV terminals and brake boosters.

This was my deal: They have 2 in stock, I'll go this Saturday at 6:45am and for $325.00 they'll check the car, replace the rack and have it tested by noon. The parts AND SERVICE are warrantied for the life of the car (what's left anyway), given you bring it for a free check every 6 months.

A new one at Courtessy Nissan (so they say) is $1452.64, without shipping (JESUS!), so I think this saturday's deal is sweeeet.

The name of the place is FEDERAL, maybe there's one near you.

That price seems off. OE retail is about $750 for a Nissan rack. Maybe they added the shipping in already, and compounded it.

Where did you got that price?

Anyway, job was done for the quantity said, it took about 2 hours and the rebuilt rack is fine.

Something hidden appeared though. The lower shaft of the steering column has a kind of bushing, this bushing is deformed and has to be replaced.

What I don't know is if this bushing can be bought alone or if I have to buy the whole lower shaft. Anyone knows?
