Replace of Rebuild Oil Pump?

I am rebuilding a 95 DE motor and need an opinion here. Do I need to replace the oil pump (part of the front cover) or just "rebuild" it with a new gear set, seals and pressure relief valve?

Also, would new rings, bearings, timing components, and a good hone be good enough. The motor apparently has less than 100K. Is there anything else that should be done while it is all apart?

At the minimum I would rebuild the oil pump, which includes the gear and seals but I don't believe includes the regulator. Take the regulator apart, if there is any sign of wear, scratches, or rough movement, replace it and the oil pump cover. If you want to be truely safe, replace em anyway (Even after a through inspection my regulator still siezed a couple hundred miles down the road).

As for the rest, it depends the condition of the motor and what you plan to do with it (Turbo, High compression NA, Nitrous...). Once the block is broken down and inspected for cracks (magnaflux), and straightness and bore size that will tell you if you need to bore, deck it, or just rehone. That will also determine your rings or possibly pistons. As for timing I would recommend new chains, and guides. Also take a look at the sprockets for wear, replace if nessasary.

If you rebuild it, it is cheaper and offers you the high pressure option. Since it is not ran off of the distributor like in some cars, I say go for it, you aren't going to hurt any parts by going high pressure, and you will def get oil then. But if you intend to turbo, be sure you use a restrictor later.

Chezedik: Can you tell me more about this high pressure option? What type of increase are we talking here...10 PSI? What is your supply source for these parts?

I guess I will just tear down the block and have the machine shop do those checks before ordering many parts. I already got the complete timing set up (minus the sprokets) and a water pump (all OEM). So I will plan on a rebuild of the oil pump + regulator, and just check the cover over good.

I don't plan on messing with the head at all at this point, just make sure it is straight.

Really, it is a high volume pump, as pressure is a function of the regulator, but here is a link to the assembly. You probably can find the gear set around too, or have yours machined.
