OK, I give up.

How do I replace the main headlamp in my '94 Q? The owners' manual gives only instructions for the inner (high-beam) light and not the outer high/low lamp.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It's the same locking mechanism as the high beam. To ease installation of the bulb or clean the interior of the assembly, some members have dismounted from the car.

No kidding? I took off the black locking ring that holds the gasket, then tried turning the bulb, using the electrical connection to grip it, but no dice. I may have to take the assembly out because there's barely room to get my hand in there.

Thanks for your help.

On the passenger side there is a relay box or something that makes it extremely tight and uncomfortable.

The H4 bulbs are held in with wire clips. You squeeze them and the bulb is released.

The relay on the passenger side (I still don't know what the relay controls) is easy to deal with. Gently pull the top of the box forward untill it just clears the radiator support. Then gently pull the whole assembly up and off of the bracket that holds it. Then get someone with small hands to change the bulb.

Thanks, Reggie. I'm going to try that right now.

The wire clips........were are they and how many? I been having the same problem. Are they under the rubber gasket? The relay best to my understanding it is part of the daytime running ligts system that is not used in the US however it is pre wired as many things are, it's used in Canada, I have been trying to get the other parts so I can have running lights. The system uses the high beams at a reduced voltage.

Could please help with my question, I need to change my bulbs! Thank you ahead of time!!:ylsuper

H4 bulbs? I was under the impression that the 1994 Q used 9003 and 9005 bulbs. My 1995 seems to be these too ... can you confirm, please? I was just about to buy some of the Sylvania Silverstars that people here like, but I want to make sure that I am not getting the wrong ones for my 1995 Q!

9003s and H4s are the same thing. These are the High/Low beams. The wire clip is attached to the headlight housing under the rubber cover.

Remove the plug, remove the plastic ring, remove the rubber cover. Look down behind the light assembly and you will see the clips. Squeeze them together untill they release.

Its really easy the second time you do it.

I feel like the guy who starts a fight and walks away...

I didn't get to the light until today because the Q was in the shop for a power steering idler pulley and new belts. Some fun, eh?

Anyway, the headlight, with directions, is a snap. Do like Reggie says. The clips are actually part of a wire "horseshoe" mounted on the socket below the bulb. They have protruding handles above the bulb.

Squeeze the handles together (toward the bulb) and they will spring out of whatever holds them. Pivot the horseshoe down on its mount so that it's clear of the bulb, then pull the bulb out.

Put the new bulb in its place, pivot the horseshoe back up, squeeze the handles together and push the clips back into place.

Once I knew how, this took all of two minutes. Thanks to all for your help.
