I have recently had a u-joint go on my 1991 hardbody d21 Longbox pick-up. Took it to the dealership today and I was told that in order to change the u-joint I need a completely new driveshaft. I have a cousin who is a mechanic and I asked him and he said he has never heard of having to replace a complete driveshaft to change a u-joint. I was wondering if anyone has any more ainfo on this. I don't have a lot of money and need to keep the truck running but don't want to get screwed by a dealer (they wanted $950 for a new driveshaft.) Do I really need to replace my whole driveshaft? Thanks

you shouldnt have to replace the whole thing. i have never worked on a d 21 so im not sure if it has some weird u joint that is permanently attached, a quick look under the truck would let you know though. your other option is to take it some were else and get a second opinion.

it's definently easier to replace the driveshaft, alot less work at leastu-joints are a b*tch, try it yourself then ask what you would charge to do that for somebodyanyways, as far as i know the u-joint should be able to be replaced separately, so i would check at some local shops, u-joints are pretty much the same across the board and any shop could do it
