2016 Rogue SV 4WD with 21,000 miles.
My wife had a nail in the sidewall and service manager said it is a NY state requirement that all 4 tires must be replaced at the same time. Not doing so will damage the transfer case. I explained that the Rogue is not full time 4WD like a Subaru. He wouldn't budge.
What do you think?

That is a silly requirement by the NY state, why would they care if your transfer case is damaged or not?
Tire shop trying to make a quick $$$. Measure the depth your self, I would think within 1/16" should be fine.
Not sure if there are tire shops near you that have a "tire shaving machine"(basically a larger low speed lathe).
Its used to shave down the tires to match your current tires thread depth; we have a few tire shops that provide this service. BTW the Rogue is full awd under 9 mph.
FYI,
Just did some looking and tirerack provides this service.
Hope that helps

The guy is lying about any state regulations, but he's right that all four tires should have the same tread depth. He wants to sell you a full set of tires. I'd buy from someone else.

Talk about trying to finding something else wrong bs.

Perhaps the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with your newish rogue.

I would have gone to merchant tires or Goodyear tires.

For anything doing with a nail.

Other than uneven wear from the older tires,

That's about it.

U can replace all four and use the other 3 for backup, but then again according to your dealer, your s*#t out of luck.

If your happy with the tread wear of the other 3 tires, I would just replace the damaged tire. :bigthumb:

I highly doubt that their statement about the state regulations are true. Should be easy to confirm online.
~ BUT ~
The Rogue AWD vehicle IS "full time" AWD, in that AWD is active all the time and moves torque between front/rear constantly.

How the intuitive AWD system works:

Take the Nissan Rogue, Murano, or Pathfinder for example; each one of these SUVs is a front wheel drive vehicle. Each one earns a reasonable fuel economy rating because energy isn’t being wasted due to the intuitive all-wheel drive system.

Without you having to press a single button or even flip a switch, Nissan’s system is able to sense when the wheels are beginning to slip and need to regain more traction. For example, when you pull away from a dead stop at a red light and the ground is slippery or when you’re taking a turn on a slick corner and feel the tires begin to skid, these are both scenarios when the all-wheel drive would immediately kick in. By distributing the torque across each of the tires, your Nissan is able to get back on track and better grip the ground.

mac , isn't it the overall diameter that's in question here that MUST match ?

I just replaced the 2 front tires.
Front tread on the new tires is 8mm.
Older tires on the rear are 5mm.
In reading the manual I understand that the vehicle only goes into AWD when it senses slipping.
So should I get 2 more tires or get the new ones shaved?
How do you find a shop that does that and how much does it run?
Thanks

Ask yourself what EVERY vehicle on the planet does as it goes around a corner to have one tire travel whoppingly more or less than the other due to differential action.

While it is helpful to keep all tires at the exact same height (in snow) with 4WD it is nowhere near absolutely necessary. The tires all slip variably from each other to match circumferential rollouts all day long as the ptrac units are designed to do so under say low power cruise loads, they only lock up 100% at max loads. And even then under severe forces they can slip separately from each other to avoid damage.

You are over thinking this. You should have just replaced one tire if it was not repairable.

Holy cow!!!

There will almost always be a tread depth difference between tires because on those that are slightly deflated more than the others will use up faster. Just a couple of psi's less and i'm sure the tires in the front will use up faster than the rear. Thats why they try to sell us frequent tire rotations I guess.

I am an old fart, but even my ocd butt thinks this is over doing it.

Funny thing, I was in a similar situation with a 2006 IS250 AWD that had around 10,000 miles.

This was a couple of years ago.

It was mainly garaged, but had a nail in the sidewall on a rear tire.

But my ocd butt thought about getting all 4 changed since the tires were about a decade old.

The independent tire shop guy was surprised since I was leaning toward changing all four.

His suggestion was just changing the damaged tire only; since the treads were still very good on the original OEMS.

So I just changed the one.

I would never change less than 2 yr old tires on a newish rogue.

But the idea of wearing down new tires to match the old ones is just not in my vocabulary.

You do live in snowy buffalo , ny.....unlike myself.

Or just don't rotate your tires until they are close in tread depth.

Anyways, you do you...........is best.

Ps- I actually never rotate tires until recently since I bought jack stands and a hydraulic jack and did it for the hell of it. Not a priority at all.

I concur.

But you have to consider over a decade INSIDE a double garage with between 10,000- 15,000 miles on these tires.

And that CUSTOMER wanted to change All the tires.

,,,,, I know, a miracle that the tire shop guy didn’t want to make more profit on situation.

Anyways, I tend to believe they wouldn’t put their customers in danger of perhaps a dry rot tire.

I like to believe there are honest good people in the auto industry.

Its not a museum piece, hopefully its driven enough each month to prevent dry-rot.

I will Definitely keep an eye out for it since you mentioned it.

And if i get another nail, then definitely a good reason to change all of them.

If the service guy quotes state law that you need to replace all 4 tires, make him show you the law online. My tire shop says they RECOMMEND all 4, and their policy REQUIRES new tires to be place on the rear, not the front. But that is their corporate policy, not state law (different state, but you get the idea) I listen to their schpeil, smile, nod and then tell them to replace the damaged tire.

mac, right about dismissing the bull' and getting just what you want , beware of most tire shops over torque your wheels with the Airguns and then "Appear" to use torque-wrench properly - good chance of getting "non-removeable-stripped" lugs , and that's NOT EVEN IF THEY'RE PISSED-OFF !!
