I'm considering buying one of the pin-removal tools ive heard about, but im not really sure what type i need or from where to buy it. I figured out the smaller pins pretty easily, just removing the gray shield and lifting up on the plastic tabs holding the pins in, but the larger pins i cant seem to get out with a reasonable amount of force. Anyone care to explain the technique or where i can buy the proper tool other than a small screwdriver?

I asked this question awhile back on Racebread and it seems like a lot of people don't even try to re-pin and just cut and solider... But its sooo much easier to re-pin.

This is what I did (I wish I would have taken pictures); you'll need a small pointy object of sorts. I used one of the prods from a multimeter. The smaller pins are way easy. Remove that gray sheld you were talking about. Now you will see a bunch of slits on top of the connector. Every other think strip of plastic is a retaining clip for the pin. All you have to do is carefully move the little strip of plastic that is holding the pin, to one side and slide the wire out. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING LABLED. or you transfer the wires directly into a new connector (thats what I did, so I wouldn't get confused). I wish i had pictures to show this but i don't... But if you look at it you'll figure it out. Then for the bigger pins I took a T-pin (a needle shaped like a T so you can hold it and work with it) to free the pin from the retaining clip (same concept as the small pins except you have to go in from the front of the connector and push the piece of plastic off of the pin). and slide the pin out. These take a little more work and its hard to explain how to free the pin, but just carefully work it and you'll figure it out.

I really hope that made sense I wish i had pitures to better explain.. Let me know if that helped.

I just used a paper clip.Or a pin cant remeber. Its easy just push it in there and the connector EASILY comes out.Do not pull it out.

OK, i didnt realize that there was a gray plastic thing on the big pins too, after i figured that out they came out super easy. Just for future reference for other people, you have to remove 2 gray connectors to get the pins out.

I have an assortment of those little precision screwdrivers--there is one in there that works perfect.
