I'm looking to buy a 'Vert that looks to be in pretty good shape. Price is good, except the top has a 4 inch tear in it. I've checked the prices on top replacement and didn't like what I saw, and I found the DIY process pretty daunting as well

This is a pic of the tear:

Have any of you had experience with patching a tear in your 'vert's top? I've found some websites stating that heavy-duty iron-on patches work well and have held up for years. I know a patch will be visible from the outside, I don't mind that for now. I'd replace the top eventually, just can't spend $1000 on that right now

Any input?

A buddy of mine just bought a used s2000 and saw dealership patched up 2 inch tear just like yours with some silicone. It looked pretty clean and strong. I'm sure if you take it to convertible top place, they can tell you what you can use. Who knows? They will fix it at reasonable price. If I were you, I'd take it to professional.

Remember that the inside of our tops is dirty nasty from years of weather and just being cloth. That's made the cloth thin and also makes it hard to get patches to adhere. You should be able to clean it down fairly well, and make a temp patch work.

The S2000 might have been an easier fix because the top was newer and not as old ragged as ours have gotten. Also, I think S2000s have vinyl tops, and not the stayfast/canvas we have.

I would ask around and see what shops would charge to repair the tear.

Also, while the replacement looks daunting, it's not overly difficult. I've done 2 tops and picked up tips and tricks, which was what I was trying to convey in the DYI but you don't get from reading the service manual.

On the bright side, you can use that tear as a bargaining chip to get the seller to lower the price a bit hopefully.
