I'm not an expert on this but found this on the web,maybe it could help.
polarized capacitor
some capacitors are polarized. they can only be used one way. wiring it in backwards can cause it to explode
Did you noticed a + and a - on it , did you matched it to the board?
too much voltage
capacitors are rated to very specific maximums. generally most can take up to 35% above their ratings temporarily in events like a power surge. But they cannot operate at that voltage for too long. The capacitor would overheat, causing the electrolytic fluid to boil. If that goes on for too long, the capacitor would explode.
Could be culprit could be a sneaky power surge somewhere or the rating could be wrong.Hope that sheds some light!
