My rear seat panel came loose a while back. Turns out the two clips on the top broke off and the plastic around the holes on the bottom shattered. I super glued this puzzle back together, but it didn't hold. Any ideas other than waiting on a black Q to hit the local JY?

No ideas from anyone? Anyone got a black seat back from 94-96 laying around?

As far as I remember the seat back has metal tabs that fit down into plastic receivers in the car's body... could be wrong though. Are you sure the plastic parts aren't actually retainers that could be ordered separately?

There was a nice black seat at the local Upick and Pull. I got some parts off it during their two for one special last week. The seat bottom was lying in the mud but the top was still in the car.

It's not the back seat. It's the back panel of the front seat. The one with the pocket.

had similar instance on my silver '94. i used plastic (PVC) glue and a fender washer (on the inside) to hold all the broken bits down. put it in a press to set up. may need a longer screw depending on washer thickness.

Super Glue didn't hold, but maybe the PVC glue would. You're talking about the stuff plumbers use?

A good amount of JB Weld Epoxy should do the trick. I am not familiar with the design of the part, but if necessary you can include supports within the epoxy like pieces of wire etc. I just repaired a carpet cleaner attachment with JB weld and it has held up perfectly; repaired a higher pressure water supply hose plastic piece that is probably twenty years old.

Just remember to sand the parts to be glued down and clean them well with something like denatured alcohol. You can use the quick JB weld which can set within 30-40 minutes, but need to cure overnight.

Are you talking about the clips at the top of the seat back, or the tabs with the screw holes at the bottom? (I'm making an assumption that the design is similar to the 90-93 style)

Both top and bottom.

I didn't know JB Weld worked on plastic. I thought it was for metal. I like the idea of reinforcing the repair.

The 90 Q has screw holes on the bottom that can break out... especially if someone is rough with the seat back or props their feet on it. On my old Q I clamped a piece of aluminum flashing over this area and drilled holes for the screws. The area was too damaged to just use a couple of flat washers, and it's hidden from view anyway. I don't have anything good for you on the top...

Remember they're talking about JB weld epoxy, which I believe is different than regular JB weld...

I would assume theres maybe a little bit of the tab remaining... Could you maybe put a screw in it going vertically so that it clips on the inside of the back of the seat...? Or some sort of hook, id have to think youd have a little bit of plastic there you could drill in. I dont think epoxy is going to work, but maybe, ive never used it.

Its hard to make something do what its supposed to do and not look tacky.

yes. the reinforcement is important too. Heath's idea is similar---i just happened to have some fender washers (small hole, big O.D.)

Epoxy formulated for plastic repair is readily available, and cheap - $3 at walmart. Last night I used some to glue my padded dash down which was shrinking and bowing up near the defrost cowl - tonight I will unclamp it and see if it holds.

I have a similar problem to AbD's with the bezel on the passenger door that holds the window and seat adjustment switches - the molded retainer features that should snap in to place are snapping off. I did scab a tiny piece of metal over the broken plastic finger, similarly to how one may scab a 2x4, and it did hold until I had to remove it again. In this case I'd used JB weld, instead of plastic repair epoxy. I think I will use a counter sunk screw and fasten a metal extension to the bezel.

Plastic is an inexpensive, wonderful material, except after it ages, turns brittle and snaps.

I bought some stuff at Advanced that worked better on plastic than anything that I have ever used before. It's called "Plastix" by Loctite. It's a 2 part adhesive, like you would use on PVC pipe, with a cleaner/activator and a glue/bonder. Like on PVC, the activator seems to soften the edge of the plastic for the bond to be a real chemical reaction fusing the two pieces together. http://www.hardwareandtools.com/invt/6784466 There is also an epoxy with a similar name, so be careful, I don't know how well it works. What part of Al. are you in? The Pull-a-Part in B'ham has gotten 3 Qs in the past month or so. I think it was 2 94s and 1 92. You can go online and check to see what cars they have in. Whenever I have went there and just got small clips and stuff they will just give it to you.On a different subject, do you still have the black J30 floormats that at one time you said you were thinking about selling?

Maybe...somewhere in that mess of junk in my basement. I only had them like a week or two before my wreck. They're in perfect condition.

I'm looking for a set, but I'm not in a big hurry. If you run across them send me an email and I will meet you somewhere and pay you for them. I live toward Walker county, about a mile from the world famous Wesley's Boobie Trap. How is your seat repair coming along?
