I recently had my water pump & timing belt replaced on my 2004 civic after 60,000 miles for about 700$. No problems, for 2 days. 3rd day I get a whining noise on the driverside around 2500->4000 rpm. Take it back to the dealership. The dealership says it is a bad bearing in the power steering pump and they now want 800$ for parts and labor to fix the bearing. I probably should get the repair because it is my DD (although I don't need power steering) but I feel that this is something the dealership should help out with as there was no problem prior to the repair. The car was absolutely fine prior to the maintenance repair (which was only recommended by the owners manual).

Am I getting taken here?

Get away from the dealership. Run like you've never run before. Take it to someone qualified.

That is a VERY short life for a power steering pump if it has indeed s*** the bed.

Thanks! I picked the civic up from the dealership and they said that the pump may settle with the belt and even if it doesn't it should last a lot longer. Sooooooo at the least a new dealership is needed.

Thanks. I just opened the hood up. Seems that I have no coolant in my reservoir tank even though I paid an extra 100 for it....

dam.. I swear man just because its a dealership, they are still people that do bulls*** work. I know a few guys that have and are currently employed at a dealer and I hear all the BS stuff they do like taking a brand new SRT8 300C to about 140mph, and coming back blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. All he did was shrug his shoulders "oh well, not my car". Its a disgrace that there is no trust anymore anywhere, it really is.

Back on topic. I suspect the tech didnt fill the pump back up if he had to drain it after he did the work or something, that doesnt just happen. Also 700$ is a pretty good price for a timing belt, how did they get 800 f'ing dollars for a PS pump??

They can blame the pump, the lines, and the belt. That crap will add up. Why can't dealerships freaking hire people with at least 3/5ths of a brain these days? I guess people with 1/2 a brain or less will work for less.....

I'm hoping the genius that worked on your car didn't fill the p/s pump back up or bleed your p/s system. After hearing about your coolant, I wouldn't doubt it.

Haha I know thats what I mean. You shouldnt even have to drain it, just take it off by the 3 bolts to the bracket and set it aside with a bungee cord. Thats also bullcrap trying to sell all this other crap thats hardly related to the true problem, it makes me mad sometimes.

If it really gets loud and scary I would just buy a used one and have someone the right way if you dont wanna do it yourself. Itll be alot cheaper than that $800 crap

After everything is done, put a flaming bag of poop on the doorstep of the dealership.

Remember that the reservoir is exactly that. It's not supposed to be full when the car is cold.

Thanks Doom. But there was nothing, even below the min line. An email to the dealership is already en route.

Krash, I am going to attempt a rebuild of mine, and if not I'm going to just buy one and attempt to install it myself. 450 bucks for labor is ridiculous.

wow. Im sure it doesnt take 4 hrs for that. Junkyard is your friend. Also not sure if you have to press a bearing in or not. If thats the case you had better go used or rebuilt, or new if its for a good price.

Have you checked the fluid in the power steering reservoir yet?
So do you still have power steering? Does the noise get louder as you turn the wheel?

I did check the ps reservoir as I read online that occasionally after belt replacements people forget to refill them. There was indeed fluid in the reservoir. The noise only shows up under acceleration, no issue at all when turning the wheels, even close to locking them out.

I don't have a press but have read that the caveman technique still works for the bearing. I am looking just to replace the unit though as it looks to be a few step process because it is on top of the engine and access is good.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to rev it up with the PS belt off? Are you sure it's the PS pump?
